He certainly wouldn't let political correctness get in the way of him.
Its a shame we don't have anyone of his like today. Imagine what he would be like on the chat show circuit ? He would certainly give smart a*ses like Jonathan Ross a run for his money! |

He's not a journalist, definitely not a comedian, or even an entertainer so what talent does he possess does anyone know? Or is he a just a member of the Danny Baker school of hangers-on, gag stealers and a general pain in the arse? Perhaps I'm being too hard on the bloke because there are hundreds on the telly these days who can comfortably fit into the same category!

He seems to be flavour of the month at the BBC at the moment as he seems to be presenting EVERYTHING. I think he is starting to get on everyone's breasts now including mine. The difference between him and his brother, Paul, is that at least JR has a sense of humour.
I think guests on his show must be told before they go on air, 'Jonathan's going to take the piss out of you, hope you don't mind' because they seem to take all his insults quite well. Or perhaps it is the generous appearance fee??! |

I was interested to read Leslie Phillips' comments on James Robertson Justice in his recent autobiography. Apparently, they made 11 films together and became good friends. He speaks of him with great respect and affection, while conceding that some people in the industry found him intimidating. The passage on JRJ's death was particularly moving.
I loved to watch JRJ. With his huge bulk, bushy beard and booming voice he was surely one of the most distinctive actors in the history of British cinema. A true one-off, like Margaret Rutherford. He certainly had a full and varied life. I was amused to learn that he stood as a Labour candidate in the 1950 General Election. I wonder what the spin doctors would think of him today? I don't think that political correctness would be his strong point!! Regards Phil Turner |

"High Tide at Noon" was Patrick McGoohan's first Picture with Rank and it was entered into the Cannes Film Festival. With Mr. McGoohan's later antipathy towards "Showbiz" I had wondered if he had been taken to Cannes when that early movie was being presented.
I discovered a while ago that he did. I was delighted to read that he attended "accompanied by James Robertson-Justice". I didn't know much about the big man but perhaps it speaks volumes for my perception of whatever he was, that I instantly imagined him assuring the nervous new 'movie-star', in a rumbling whisper: "it is all froth and nonsense Patrick, don't think, just smile and keep walking....." ![]()

: I just like attaching illustrative photo's to posts..... Mind you, there is a connection, as Michael Craig (who I think is still alive and golfing in Australia) is the chap on the left. Michael chased Patrick off their Nova Scotian Island in High Tide (sounds unlikely to me... )![]()

There's a book coming out about him soon ; co-wriitten by our very own HOGGERS. An Amazon search might help, or they might (I think) have the details at CARRY ON LINE.

Some of the Posts have been made to look a bit odd by various ISP failures but still intelligible:

He stood for parliament as a Labour candidate I believe, had a doctorate, loved falconary, big parties and had an even more infectious laugh than Sid James. He sounded as large in real life as he was on screen, a real one of a kind.
