name='Wicked Lady']The Astonished Heart is a guilty pleasures I drag out on wet afternoons. It's so awful for so many reasons - and yet brilliantly awful. Noel Coward couldn't have put in a stiffer performance if he'd been coated from head to foot in Spray Starch. The dialogue is dreadful. Celia Johnson and Margaret Leighton are terrific in their scenes together but otherwise look like they'd rather be at the pub. It's dreadful...And yet I can't look away!
I've never seen The Astonished Heart, only bits and pieces of it. I've watched The Noel Coward Story (about 1-1/2 hours from PBS) many times, mainly for the music. I hummed some of his music for years (Someday I'll Find You) without realizing who wrote it. He personified his era and place, without being 'born' to it, without being especially good looking or talented (singing and acting-wise).
