I've watched this movie several times and have yet to fathom out why Glenda's performance won her an Oscar.

I mean its a fine movie and shes fine in it - but does anyone have any thoughts as to why her performance was worthy of an Oscar?

I thought she was fine in it. She didn't knock me out like Vanessa Redgrave did in The Devils but I couldn't see any reason why she shouldn't have won - after all it has little to do with who is the best in any given category does it?

Glenda was up against Jane Alexander in The Great White Hope, Ali MacGraw in Love Story, Sarah Miles in Ryan's Daughter and Carrie Snodgrass in Diary of a Mad Housewife.

I've only seen Ryan's Daughter and Love Story from that lot so I'd have no argument with GJ getting the nod.

Mind you, the quality control for the 1970 Oscars was such that Love Story got nominated for almost every major award!

Oh Ollie! Of course she should of won...you're just disappointed 'Gerald' didn't do any better...seriously Glenda's character was so right for the supposedly liberating times for women. I actually thought Alan Bates stole the show.

I should think she deserved it for suffering that rascal Ollie Reed. I did read smewhere that she got a little more than was written in the script during her enforced romp with him - hence the sudden flush on her face during the scene! Is this a myth?

Also, a woman not generally regarded as a 'looker', managed a most alluring performance at times. Very deep and smouldering, far sexier than Ms Linden I thought.

From stardom to a Labour MP. What a riches to rags life. Still, she doesn't rely on her past glories.

    Regards,

I'd have to agree with you. Reed made some crass and ungenerous remarks about her physique which reflected more on his taste in women (acquiescent and not too bright) but it's hardly surprising they didn't get on. She could be - and I imagine still can be - quite formidable as a personality.

As for beauty: Dirk Bogarde put his finger on the quality she possessed - "a inner magnificence." In reality, she was a raw-boned, slightly horse-faced, northern lass, with very un-Hollywood teeth. But somehow - through sheer personality and intelligence - she convinced you she was attractive. That's quite a feat.
