In my opinion the georgeous Simon Williams is one of the most under rated British actors. Does anyone else think so? Of course most famously known as James from Upstairs downstairs I remember him being in a few things, although only smaller parts including The Uncanny trying to swizzel his aunt out of her will.

I hope whatever he is up to he is still acting!

I adore him! He pops up in something now and then and it's always a treat to see him again.

Hevn't seen SW for a while now. A couple of years ago he wrote and starred in two very funny plays; we managed to see the sequel BOYS WILL BE BOYS - very funny. Would love to see him again soon.

Simon's brother, Hugo, is just as handsome. He's a fine poet, and one of his books, 'Writing Home', is wonderful......especially good for fans of his father Hugh.

As well as poems of Hugo's teenage struggles with his Dad , there is a funny and moving poem, taken from Hugh's letters home during the war.

Simon was a guest on Give Us A Clue in the 1980s and I was shocked to see his dark hair had turned white - and it wasn't for a part he was playing. A story about this alarming development appeared in the newspapers at the time and all I think it was stress-related. Happily, his 'bonce' returned to normal and he went on to co-star with Tony Britton and Nigel Havers in the sitcom Don't Wait Up, but it was a worrying sight for a time. Un-happily the hair is now naturally grey these days. I like Simon, always seemed a good sort.

His parents wrote play The Grass Is Greener, and later the screenplay for the all-star film.

Williams also appeared in a few 60's films. Namely The Touchables and the awful Breaking Of Bumbo with Joanna Lumley. He redeemed himself with the excellent Blood On Satan's Claw and as the Prince in Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky, though he also starred in two best forgotten Peter Sellers films in the late 70's.

Very much the same school as Chris Cazenove and Ian Ogilvy. All three were old Etonians?

When he was just 20, Simon appeared in my favourite episode of Man In A Suitcase - The Bridge.

According to IMDB, this was his screen debut. What a great way to start a career!

Rodney Bewes and Jane Merrow, both long-time favourites of mine, headed a glittering cast. As usual, I can't resist telling you what was No.1 in the charts when this was first broadcast, on 20th December 1967, and, as I knew only too well, it was The Beatles with Hello Goodbye. This wasn't quite a perfect match, however, as this beautifully-shot colour episode could only be shown in black-and-white. Something we have the chance to redress all these years later.

He is also an accomplished playwright. One of his plays "Laying The Ghost" starred Francis Matthews in its inaugural run

Anyone esle remember Company and Co, a comedy-drama in which he and Maria Aitken were cabaret singers who fought crime and sang a couple of songs every episode? Truly they don't make 'em like that any more

And wife Lucy's father was travel writer Peter Fleming brother of 007 writer Ian Fleming whose half-sister was cellist Amaryllis Fleming who doubled for Bette Davis in "Connecting Rooms"; and his sister-in-law Kate Fleming's father-in-law was politician Jo Grimond (Lord Grimond, Life Peer) and her mother-in-law Lady Grimond (nee Laura Bonham Carter) was a descendant of H. H. Asquith the 1st Earl of Oxford & Asquith and Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916 and he was the great grandfather of Helena Bonham Carter and the father of director Anthony Asquith and at this point I was hoping to say that Anthony Asquith directed Simon Williams in something-or-other but unfortunately he didn't.

His son, Tam, is an excellent actor and was in an episode of A Touch Of Frost last year. He played a transvestite and was totally convincing as a woman, it fooled me until very late in the episode!

I like Simon Williams very much - by own opinion is that his son is a better actor.

I worked with Simon in theatre in about 1975. He is well spoken but is also one of the nicest actors I have worked with. For those who don't know his father and mother were a very famous UK writing/acting team. Sadly, Simon was working with his father in theatre when his father died and had to go on the next night with an understudy. Simon was extremely good to me when we worked and I have fond memories of that tour.
