I've been revisiting Stella Street on DVD and am minded that this gifted actor and comedy character actor has mislaid his star a little, with -for him- subdued appearances on QI being his only recent TV of note.

Whilst his career is hardly moribund with (according to IMD regular small film roles keeping it ticking over, he has certainly suffered some bad press for notional self-absorbtion in his stream-of-consciousness dynamic and literary allusions (too highbrow!) in his comedy improvs of previous years. I suspect that any literary allusion is too highbrow for some (Stephen Fry seems to get away with it though).

But he has had this stigma of being rather a luvvie and full of himself to boot. Is that really valid? And is that not an acknowledged and licensed component of the actor's persona anyway? How good would Burton, Pacino, or any of the foremost screen actors be if they weren't so 'up themselves'? (though in the case of Cruise, it could only improve his performances).

Still, if he can merely aspire to be the 'new' version of that fine and valued character actor in my avatar, then that will be acclaim enough IMO.

I agree that John Sessions is underrated. He has given some wonderfully subtle performances over his career. For a long while during the late 80's into the early 90's he was subjected to castigation from certain sections of the media - although that has subsided in recent years. I recall he was viciously lampooned on Spitting Image.
