Sad to discover that bodybuilder and sometimes actor Howard “Vanderhorn” Nelson was reported as a missing person by the police on Tuesday 3rd February 2009, Nelson was one of those quirky character types that popped up in a lot of George Harrison Marks’ 8mm and feature films, as well as acting in other films like Zapper’s Blade of Vengeance and Carry on Emmanuelle, heres hoping “The Horn” turns up safe and sound.

I knew Howard back in the 1970's.He was my first model to pose naked for our mags.We kept in touch right up until the late 1990's.I last saw him waiting at Charing Cross Underground station.

He wanted to become a singer of classic songs, when I lost contact I don't know if he had advanced his ambitions.A great fella, soft spoken, always polite, nothing ever got him ruffled.

When I first met him,he was living in Liverpool, and was the boy-friend of the 1960's model,Annette Johnson. Then he moved to London in later years.

I shall always remember him with great affection.

While watching an episode of Minder on ITV4 recently I was surprised to spot Howard pop up as a boxer. The episode “No Way to treat a Daley” was from 1993, so this was a good few years after his last film credit, 1978’s Carry On Emmannuelle, and his 1982 appearance as a spanking milkman in Harrison Marks’ New Janus magazine. However I’m unsure whether this appearance represented a belated return to acting, or whether Howard did more TV extra work in the 1980s and 1990s that has gone under the radar. His character is allocated a name, Bill “Flying Dutchman” Van Dyke, but no dialogue and in terms of screen time its a strictly ‘blink and you’ll miss him’ appearance, or in the context of his role “blink and he’s been knocked out”.

I recall that his voice in Carry On Emmannuelle was dubbed by Kenneth Connor in an Australian accent.

After only discovering that Howard had died today, the family would like to share their thanks for the nice comments that have been written on this thread. We have only just had confirmation from the internet and this thread of his death. We will hopefully be finding out more from the Met Police in the next few days. We have been looking for him for the last 5 years after contact suddenly ended but had no address and those we spoke to in London had not seen him in a while. The main confusion is Howard Vanderhorn Nelson is his stage name, Howard Daley was his real name, which makes the episode title "No way to Treat a Daley" all the more poignant. God rest his soul.

Me and a friend were trying to track him down for an interview for years on account of some the films he’d been in and because he sounded like such a fascinating character in his own right, sadly it wasn’t to be, and we eventually discovered from the MET that he passed away a few years back.

Lorny78 if want to see any of the films Howard was in I’d be happy to run you off a DVD containing all the footage I have of him.

Here are a few screenshots of him in “The Girl Upstairs” which I believe was made circa 1972

That would be fantastic Mr Flash. Have spoken to his neice and she wanted to pass on her thanks too. We are finding out a lot about Uncle Howard and some of the modelling he did for Spanking magazine. Never realised he had done a front cover.
They are sending the death certificate up soon so we are hoping to get more answers. Thanks again for the information and offer for the DVD x
