June 20, 1909 to be exact. Ignoring his 'colorful' past, he brought a level of energy on screen (especially his early pictures) which has never been equalled.

    Swash-buckling at it's best!

The Adventures of Robin Hood and Captain Blood

Errol Flynn and Clark Gable formed my idea of a heroic figure when I was a boy.

My parents always watched the old classic films. I saw Captain Blood when I was about six and practiced sword fighting with plastic swords for weeks after that.

I don't want to become known as the "book person" on Britmovie, but I thought Jeffrey Myers dual biography of Errol and Sean Flynn ("The Son of Captain Blood") well worth reading.

The Adventures of Robin Hood is the pinnacle of Western civilisation. That's all.

    Thanks Bookperson!

There has never been and never will be again (the mercurial Johnny Depp included) anyone to match Flynn for roguish charm, athleticsm and a kind of easy unforced presence on screen.

Has there ever been a more stylish entrance for an "action hero" than "Welcome to Sherwood, My Lady"! in "The Adventures Of Robin Hood".

I hope the centenary honours all Flynn's talents - not just his lethario reputation...

There's nothing wrong with being known as a "book person".

For me, the greatest film star of all time.

Not the greatest actor, but the most charismatic star when on the screen - most colourful star when not.

Errol inthe under-rated The Big Boodle ..... not the greatest Flynn film, but a rare chance to see the great man in a noir style thriller.

It is good. It's one of the first films I purchased that had Torin in it.

I loved him in "The Sun Also Rises". He really seemed to be developing as an actor in this movie perhaps because his character was more complex than in his earlier movies. Shame he died only two years later.

    I agree.

There is a scene in that film where he is sitting on a bed and has to look into the camera. He looks old, tried; completely worn out. And he hadn't yet reached 50 years of age.

A true libertine - his much publicised lifestyle often eclisped his onscreen performances - of which this was one of his best IMO.

Truely a legend in his own lifetime. And how many stars could say that?

Errol Flynn should be the SI unit by which all stars should be measured.

There's a clip on Youtube where he appears on a Canadian show called "What's My line' - shortly before his death. Bloated and tired, and looking a lot older than this 50 years, you can still see the sparkle in his eyes. Oddly enough, several years ago I found myself in Stowe (a ski resort in Vermont) and spent the night in a small B&B there. One night, I was talking to an old gent who said he spent many an evening on his yacht in the mid-50's. Likewise, he said many of the Flynn tales were not exaggerated - parties, young women and general mayhem - and why not?

Regardless of his personal life, his acting will always be a great pleasure to watch.

There have been, and will be in future, many better actors than Errol .... but there will never ever be another actor whose star burns as bright as Errol's.
