Default Bring on the empty horses
There are two chapters in david nivens book bring on the empty horses about a woman he calls 'missie', i was wondering if anyone knew who she was, the clues are she was a child star, had a young daughter, came from texes, had a few bad relationships and had a mental breakdown (although i dont know if the breakdown thing was public knowledge)

oh i know that, but its just a thing me and my dad are doing, hes been pondering it for years and i have only just finished reading it a few weeks ago and i was trying to proove a point lol.

David Niven's books are really about the character (called David Niven) that he played for most of his life. Probably his greatest performance.

His books are all wonderful reads but shouldn't always be taken too literally.

For more background try reading The Other Side of the Moon by Sheridan Morley (son of Robert Morley).

Also a good read but it gives more background to many of Niven's stories.

In Stewart Granger's Book "SPARKS FLY UPWARDS" 1981 he also tells Nivens story of that night with 'Missie'. Niven is very derogatory about the other man at 'Missie' house and that man according to Granger was... Stewart Granger. His version paints a different picture of the relationship between Niven and himself but the rest is not to inconsistent. I agree with Steve that Niven did live his life playing a character. That character was also a great raconteur and wit. His natural charm and good humour so much in evidence during his interviews was bound to embellish his yarns over the years. As for Granger I don't think he gave a shit about anyone but Stewart Granger and with his eye on the money unmasked Nivens 'Missie' as...Vivien Leigh.

As you say so yourself Steve "His books are all wonderful reads but shouldn't always be taken too literally". Also as you say "David was always a gentleman and never revealed any details that he considered were best kept private" so maybe he was trying to put us off the scent. On the other hand the more I read about Granger the more he comes over as a selfish, self-centerd, egotistic shit. Making a few bob off anybody's embarrassment or grief would have been no ignominious act in his mind.
