    Evening,

I have just been watching Dr Who on BBC 3, an episode with Bernard Cribbins as Donna`s dad. Now then Mr FG is arguing that it doesn`t matter but unless I`ve missed something and it IS connected, why have they cast Bernard Cribbins in Dr who again? Surely with all the actors in Britain thats a bit silly as he is already connected with Dr who in the film with Peter Cushing, or is that different because its not the series? I would imagine it would be relevant to people who have been Dr who fans for years.

I know this isn`t the first time its happened, I`m sure there have been a couple of actors who have returned to corronation street as someone else, but if you are into film and t.v history I find this sort of thing a bit off putting.

What are your opinions, and can someone clear up whether Bernard Cribbins is relevent as a knock on from the film into the series? Probably not, my guess is that most people would say its different since he was only origionally in the film. Its just that my mind went straight back to the film as soon as I saw him, and I`m not a huge Dr who fan!

    xx

Bernard was brought back because the actor who played Catherines father sadly died, Bernard plays the grandfather.

yes it is different as it was one of the old films Bernard was in.

    Mallee

apologies but the actor concerned is Howard Attfield, he made rehearsals for the series but sadly died so Bernard was asked to reprise his role.

Casting Bernard Cribbins as Donna's grandad does, undoubtedly, harken back to the WHO past as a lot of the main crew are big fans. However, the other reason for casting him is that he is a seasoned performer and a damn fine actor - look again at the final scenes of the Catherine Tate season where the Doctor has to wipe Donna's memory...

Yes, thats the episode I`ve just seen and he is really good in it. In my mind it would be a better storyline if the grandfather (thanks Mallee!) was the origional character from the film

I am not a fan of 'New Who' but Bernard Cribbins is, as smudge said, a damn fine actor and would enhance any production. He read some of the bedtime stories on CBeebies last week. Brilliant!

Well, nobody seemed to mind when Freema Agyeman appeared as the companion only two episodes after appearing as a different character, ditto Eve Myles turning up in Torchwood after being in Who so I doubt it confuses many people. And quite a few actors have been in both series - Pauline Collins and David Troughton are probably the most famous.

Surely everyone loves Bernard Cribbins and is glad to see him in anything It's great that we
      Spoiler:
haven't seen the last of him on Who

No offence to Bernard but his voice on the wombles put me off big time, I much prefer to see him on screen.

Bernard Cribbins is a legend. That's why they cast him. Also the Peter Cushing films are adaptations of TV stories and therefore not canonical.

Mr FG says it won`t matter to the younger generation anyway, I suppose he is right, its just dinosaurs like me who analyse everything from the past whenever the chance arises

    Thanks Captain!

He's everyone's favourite Uncle - from those wonderful Jackanory stories to the latest Doctor Who - he permeates the concisousness of all who have watched or listened over the last fifty years.

Sadly, he'll be one of the greats that we won't celebrate when he's with us - but will mourn hugely when he's gone.

Not a great episode though. "Journey's End" is a bit of a mess really imo, but at least Russell wrote another nice goodbye scene (this time for Tate). (Personally I think he should stick to the goodbye scenes and leave the bulk writing to Steven Moffet, Paul Cornell, etc.)

I thought Cribbins was especially good in "Turn Left." As was Catherine Tate.

Bernard Cribbins (born 29 December 1928 in Oldham, Lancashire) is an English character actor and musical comedian.

A very simple introduction on Wikipedia for one of our most popular celebrities.

I wanted something special for my 1000th posting and hopefully thanks to a suggestion from SirOllyBolly in a different thread then this is it.

Thanks also to FaginsGirl for starting another thread relating to Bernard.

His list of credits is to say the least impressive and my own early memories of him are from Jackanory, The Wombles and of course Dr Who.

I know his name has cropped up in numerous threads but I think he deserves his own. Hopefully others will share their memories/stories in this thread to 'celebrate' such a popular person.

I was impressed with his acting in Dr who so I would like to see him in more serious roles, I have always linked him with lighthearted entertainment, but he seems very versitile

    Congrats on your 1000 post

Cribbins is one of my favourite comic actors. He excelled in the episode of Fawlty Towers, and was a great stooge to Peter Sellers in the comedies Two Way Stretch and The Wrong Arm of the Law. Unfortunately I don't find the Carry Ons he did much fun (Jack, Spying or Columbus), but this isn't his fault - in fact, he's the best thing in Jack and Columbus in my opinion! I also have a couple of his records, some very catchy and funny numbers on there too.

Congratulations on reaching 1,000 posts, mallee.

I've enjoyed seeing Bernard in all sorts of things since I was a child. One that's been rather forgotten is his BBC show Star Turn, where he was quizmaster to lots of celebrities. This was somewhere between the late '70s to early '80s, Saturday evenings, possibly following Sexton Blake. I loved that show, but can't even remember the team captains. It may have been the forerunner to That's Showbusiness with Mike Smith. All a very long time ago now.

More recently, he turned up in Coronation Street a few years ago as the 'Sugar Daddy' of Tracy Barlow, played by the much-missed Kate Ford (come back, Kate).
