Crikey, that list is a pile of pooh! Was it compiled by teenagers? Bloom? Law? McGregor? Cleese? Bettany above Mason? Bollocks! Good job I didn't see the criteria (or the show) otherwise I would have been truly annoyed.

How true that top eight is particularly amusing, glad I missed this drivel!

Who,out of the current trend of actors, will achieve the status enjoyed by Sir Alec Guinness,Lord Olivier,Lord Attenborough,Sir John Mills,Sir Sean Connery,Sir Michael Caine etc,I haven't the wisdom to forecast, but indeed the poll must have been influenced by youngsters.

Well I would agree with you Marky, except I would substitute Michael Redgrave for Michael Caine in your list - to my mind, Caine is always Michael Caine (and very lucrative it's been for him too) but Redgrave had that chameleon like quality of a truly great actor.

Fair comment,Rob - I was just reeling off my brain. A good actor and for me his finest hour was as Dr Barnes Wallis in The Dambusters .

In total agreement with you Barbara, also a fine writer. One of those actors who you could go and see and know the film will be 'interesting' never shoddy. An actor who said "when I'm dead forget about me". I don't think we ever will.

Freddy

Yes, so right, Freddy. He was a fine writer who'll be remembered in literary circles also. I'm very happy to see his books being reissued yearly starting with A Postillion Struck By Lightning in 2005, and coming up this year, Snakes and Ladders, each with new covers. The Postillion cover has a charming photo of young Derek (Dirk) about six sitting on the doorstep with his sister Elisabeth about four.

Best,

Barbara

I'll add my agreement, too. There were a number of obvious names who were missing and he was the one who stood out.

The young - what do they know!

I agree, Fell. I'm getting to sound like my grandmother who used to say that to me. But at least I loved history of all kinds even in early school years. I wanted to know what happened five, ten, 50 years ago and the people involved. Now, when I walk into HMV and ask for a classic film, the 10 year old clerk asks me to spell it out and with a puzzled look, he/she taps it into the computer. The same thing happens in some bookstores when I ask for a title other than one of the top ten sellers. So, yes, I'm not surprised that many of our great actors who are no longer with us are not remembered on the BBA list.

Best,

Barbara

Your last comment probably sums it up,Barbara. To test the mettle of anyone is how long they last in the trade and keeping up their grade one status. For example, where I wouldn't rate Sir Cliff Richard as one of my favourite singers,I do have a lot respect for him and I would defend him as he has been at the top of the tree for nearly six decades, still commanding huge audiences at concerts. I would rank him as perhaps pop music's number 1 survivor. Like many of his generation, failed to get past 1960 in the music industry and likewise in films, there were actors who showed potential in the forties and fifties, but it was a rare breed that managed to carry on in decades to come.

The quality of longevity...such a good point, Marky B. One has to be open to history to appreciate and understand that concept. Once one values history I'm convinced that appreciation extends itself more easily to the history of many areas, including film. That's another reason I value forums like BritM. They are entertaining and at the same time they educate one in the history of film. Anyone stumbling into this site has to come away with a greater appreciation of past actors and past films which then sheds light on the current. I suggest that everyone involved with film at the BBC put in a month at this site, and post a minimum of 80 messages (no one-liners) spread throughout the threads. What about Alan Bates?

And, yes indeed , Barbara, Dirk Bogarde!

Rowan Atkinson??!! A great comedian perhaps, but great actor, I don't think so! Not of the same calibre or remotely in the same league as the deserving names on the list. He simply doesn't have the acting range to be in serious contention.

It's all frivolous fluff'n'stuff anyway.

Good idea, Barbara. Then we can browbeat them into putting on some treasures - ideally starring JA or SG but we'll let you nominate one for Dirk as well

Your other point is well made, too. I've said before that I came here with a preference for Ealing over PnP but have slowly changed my allegiance. Still can't make much of many modern films, I'm afraid

I remember writing on this site a while back when the BBC did a poll of the finest performance by an actor in the history of BBC television and Colin Firth came out top for his role as Mr D'Arcy in Pride and Prejudice. Whilst not casting any doubt on Firth as a good actor,I think he won the poll because at the time he was famous for that performance and it was still fresh in many people's memories. For me,Sir Alec Guinness' peerless study of George Smiley in Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy was perhaps the leader in such a poll, but sadly by the time of the vote it was forgotten, with Sir Derek Jacobi a close second as the troubled Roman in I Claudius.
