I absolutely love watching this guy on TV. Great actor. He has played Inspector Teal in The Saint and Inspector Large in Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased). He also played Inspector Hughes in an episode of Jason King. He often was portrayed as bad tempered, but he was always so likeable.

Ivor has also appeared in several Hammer films. In Theatre Of Death he plays a French Police Inspector, very much in the mould of his usual ITC appearances. He portrayed Burke of Burke and Hare, a notorious bodysnatcher in Dr Jekyll And Sister Hyde. He was a Police Inspector again in The Sorcerers.

My favourite film performance of his was as a German officer in the classic Alastair MacLean film "Where Eagles Dare" in which he had an uncredited appearance.

Ivor was another talented actor who passed away far too young.

Well, in fact Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde was pretty much the only Hammer movie Dean did, although he appeart in a few horror films.

In the Sixties he was well known in Germany for playing Long John Silver in a highly popular TV four-part adaptation of another Stevenson novel,Treasure Island: Die Schatzinsel.

As Inspector Teal wasn't he always sucking sweets, polo?

On the Roger Moore Official site he says of Ivor Dean (2005 + photo)

He was terrific. I can't recall how many episodes he appeared in, but he joined in 1963 (a year after the first show was recorded) and stayed with us until the end in 1969. He also appared in an episode of The Persuaders a couple of years later. Ivor was a lovely man. Very intelligent, funny, warm and highly professional and it was a great tragedy that he died so young in 1974 - I believe in his mid fifties.

There are moves afoot to make a new Saint tv movie. Inspector Teal will be central to it, and the characters will be very faithful to the original stories - it will actually be set in the 1930s, though with a contemporary twist bringing in an ageing Simon Templar. Who will play him I wonder?

Yes. He was always sucking mints. I wonder if he mentioned being an ex-smoker. I can't be sure.

Roger Moore mentioned on the audio commentary of Ivor Dean's episode of The Persuaders that Ivor was a lovely man who was taken from us much too soon. I can't remember his exact words, but that was the gist of it. Roger and Ivor were great together in The Saint.

I don't quite understand why the writers changed Ivor's Claude Teal's realtionship with Simon Templar in the coloured episodes, maybe they wanted to spice things up a bit. The one exception in the coloureds outstanding episode Escape Route, where Simon and Claude seemed to go back to the relationship they had in the BAWs.

In the coloureds Teal called The Saint Templar, wanted to put him behind bars and appeared a bumbler. Whereas IMO in the BAWs Teal called him Simon, bent over backwards to help The Saint if he needed help and appeared to be a smart copper

I did notice when Ivor first played Claude, Simon called him Inspector after calling the first 3 Teal's by his first name. I think it was in The Lawless Lady with Dawn Adams that Ivor was first called Claude by Simon

PS I think Roger Moore was a great actor, in the style of Cary Grant, as was American Robert Wagner

I agree - I would rather watch him than some who have their heads up their backsides.

    Ivor Dean

I've just been watching Ivor Dean playing opposite Roger Moore in The Saint. He always seemed to play Policemen.

I've also enjoyed Ivor's performances, mainly in this show where, as Inspector Large, he worked very well with Mike Pratt - another we lost far too soon. I haven't quite caught up with his similar role in The Saint because I've only reached the early stages of the second series, but am looking forward to his appearances very much. I remember Ivor mainly for his 'trademark' raised eyebrow, brought into use when he was suspicious of someone's remark much of the time!

These are all from the episode Whoever Heard of a Ghost Dying?:

In Ivor's first scene in the series, he swivels his chair round to face Randall

Guest stars: John Fraser, Alexandra Bastedo (post-Champions), Charles Lloyd Pack & Richard Caldicot

"If he's been working with the gang, he must know who they are"

With Mike Pratt as Jeff Randall:

Original ITV transmission: 9th November 1969, when Sugar Sugar by The Archies was No. 1

Whoever Heard of a Ghost Dying? synopsis at Wikipedia

Thanks to wellendcanons for dedicating a thread to this distinctive actor. A great loss.

It's Ivor Dean's birthday today. He would have been 92 if he was still alive.

Hi. I'm also a fan of Ivor's. I also happen to be his grandson! Unfortunately he died before i was born (91). I'll have you know his partner my grandmother Pat Moses is still around and lives in Darlington. I've only recently started getting into the films and series hes acted in but what I've seen thus far has been great. My mother also tells me he wrote the book Return To Treasure Island?

Thanks Max, its always great when friends/relations take the trouble to contribute here and add that 3rd dimension to our 2 dimensional screen image of a person we all remembered with fondness.

I thought I spotted a young Ivor Dean uncredited (playing a detective policeman, of course!) in Colonel March Investigates (1952).

Hello Max. Lovely to have you on the forum. I hope you'll keep posting here. I'm delighted to hear your grandmother Pat is still doing well. I haven't as yet been fortunate to see her work. I've been a huge fan of Ivor Dean's - and indeed the entire main cast of "Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)" - since my region did the repeats in 1975. I only ever saw him in "The Saint" much later. He was a great actor whose appearence would light up any scene. He died much too soon.

    Hi Max

I have just watched your grandfather in an episode of The Saint - with Kate O'Mara,Phillip Madoc,Derek Newark and Alexandra Bastedo - and I got the impression he was not a foil to Simon Templar, but they were a double act.

It is interesting to note your grandmother lives in Darlington - not far from me - and you live in Cornwall, where my late mother comes from. Whereas your grandfather never hit the listing he deserved,he nonetheless has a place in the hearts of aficinados of British film and television.
