name='GoggleboxUK']Sean Connery returned to James Bond franchise with Never Say Never Again (1983)

He also returned in Diamonds Are Forever, replacing Lazenby.

    name='batman']You called!

IIRC Catwoman didn't appear in the series until after the feature film had been made. Therefore Julie simply replaced Lee and was then subsequently replaced by Eartha Kitt.

ps - I'd forgotten about the change of Riddlers!

You don't recall correctly, I'm afraid. The film wasn't made until the end of the first series and Catwoman appeared first (in the delectable form of Julie Newmar) in episodes 19 and 20 of that first series. Lee was in the movie but Julie returned in series two.

name='batman']Are they drugs not working FG? What are you on about?

I mean its ridiculous changing the actor then changing back again, I think its ridiculous that they changed 3 Tracy`s in coronation street and that they replaced the origional miss Ellie. I mean what are we supposed to think? That the characters have had plastic surgery?

It would be a lot more convincing if these actors just appeared in the shower when they were ready to return

    xx

    Cheers Graeme.

I read in a Batman book ages ago that the film was all set to go before Catwoman first appeared in the series, and that Lee was already cast. Further research this evening indicates that this was true, but it was Julie who had been cast but was actually unable to do the film due to prior commitments.

Apparently Adam West was nearly replaced in the film as well ... he was contracted to do two series but the film was on a separate contract. Adam asked for more cash for the film and as told 'no .... and if you don't like it we have Mike Henry lined up to do it'. If Adam hadn't agreed to do the film we could have had an Adam West-Mike Henry-Adam West scenario.

    Holy Batmans, Baman!

Barbara Bel Geddes was replaced as Miss Ellie because of ill health (cancer IIRC). The series was unable to be re-written at a late date so she was replaced by Donna Reed. Ironically, she outlived Donna Reed who later died from cancer herself.

Duncan Renaldo wasn't the first Cisco Kid, but he was in the first three in the Monogram Pictures series, then replaced by Gilbert Roland. Two years after Monogram and Roland's last, Renaldo returned in four released by United Artists, then starred in the long running TV series.

This doesn't really qualify, but I'll mention it anyway. Raymond Burr starred in the long running Perry Mason TV series. Monte Markham starred in the short lived The New Adventures of Perry Mason. Then almost two decades later Burr returned as Mason in a series of TV movies.

It counts .... as does Stacy Keach with Mike Hammer. While Keach was absent from the role, they tried to start a new series with Rob Estes as Hammer. The pilot flopped so Stacy was recalled to duty several years after his last appearance in the role.

Christine Crawford was replaced by her mother, the magnificent Joan, in the soap The Secret Storm for 5 episodes while Christine was recovering from surgery.

Apparently American soaps do this sort of thing a lot while actors are having a 'freshen up' or drying out or whatever.

Shaggy Rogers - from the various versions and spin-offs of Scooby Doo - was originally voiced by Casey Kasem up until 1997 when others took over. Casey came back to the Shagster in 2002 and is still doing it. He is now 77 years old.

In the US TV series 'Sunset Beach' (1997 to 1999) Susan Ward as Meg was replaced by Sydney Penny but returned as the character for the final episodes. The show itself was notable for its drawn out scenes and vacuous dialogue. Just like most soaps!

Not an "acting" role exactly but Richard Dawson was the original host of "Family Feud," left and was replaced by Ray Combs, and then came back again for a while.

Loved Dawson--especially on the old "Match Game."

Peyton Place. Lola Albright replaced Dorothy Malone and then I think Dorothy returned to her role. I have vague memories of Lola leaning against a fireplace at the start of each episode explaining to the audience whilst Miss Malone was indisposed she would be playing her part.

Our very own Bruce Forsyth originated the presenter role on The Generation Game on the BBC, left, was followed by Lary Grayson, and came back, albeit briefly...
