I know maybe this isn't the right place for this question, but this has been bugging me ever since I came across these listings in an old Radio Times.

Score with the Scaffold - a zany zigzag of puzzles and quizzes featuring The Scaffold, Wendy Padbury and The Fourmost.

On the edition shown Friday 7 August 1970, this question was answered:

"Every evening a person gets into the one lift in a block of flats, travels to the 10th floor, and then climbs the stairs to his home on the 15th floor. The next morning he gets into the lift on the 15th floor and gets out on the ground floor. The person is not a keep-fit fiend, nor anxious to avoid anyone in the building. What is the reason for his unusual behaviour?"

And on the edition shown Friday 4 September 1970, this question was answered:

"A man had to travel from London to Manchester for a business meeting. His wife accompanied him from his home to the station early on the morning of his departure and saw the train out of the platform. The train in which he rode north travelled without stopping. On leaving the train in Manchester, he was greeted straight away by his wife! She had travelled neither by air, rail, nor road. How did she get to Manchester?"

Unfortunately the RT didn't print the answers, so anyone out there any good at puzzles?

It's a child or a short person who cannot reach the button for the fifteenth floor.

Could it be that she was the guard on the train hence 'saw the train out of the platform'. When she got off the train at Manchester she was no longer the guard and reverted back to his wife so therefore she hadn't traveled on the train as his wife.

    Long shot, bernie the bolt.

Can't be that, it says she travelled neither by air, rail or road.

Bigamist wouldn't work either unless his Manchester wife lived on the station.

I thought it might be one of the classic puzzles that relies on gender stereotypes and that she was the train driver. But it said she didn't travel by rail and that would include any staff on the train - unless they made a mistake in the question
