Can anybody please advise which other British films were voted for.

I'd love to see the Just William films from the 40's given a release.

I'd like to see again the 1957 Ealing film Davy, starring Harry Secombe; Adele Leigh; Alexander Knox and Bill Owen. I haven't seen it since, aged ten and three quarters, I went to see it at my local ABC in January, 1958...an incredible fifty-two years ago! This was the first British film in high definition wide screen Technirama and Technicolor and I'd like to see it again so I could perhaps understand what drew to to go and see it in the first place and if I still think it looks any good. I remember I did have a bit of a crush on Adele Leigh at the time, so maybe that's why I went to see it.

What on Earth has happened to Davy, anyway? I don't recall it ever being shown on television or having a video or DVD release. It seems to have simply disappeared.

Gosh, I remember watching that on TV years and years ago. It made such a deep impression on me that I can still distinctly recall scenes in my minds-eye.....

Just for your info, the William films are available on certain (ahem) online auction sites, should you be inclined to pursue that avenue...

I believe that one has to READ Just William stories. I still do... to my 7 year old grandson who appreciates the plots as only a small boy can.

I'd be interested to know what else was voted for. I'd never heard of that film until recently!

Thanks, regentroad5. I didn't know it was available. But £35 for a DVD of Davy and no indication as to the DVD company or what the quality's like or wether it's in colour or widescreen? Hmmm, I think I'll pass on that one, even if it is a double feature.

You can buy the same item on eBay for £9.99. I'm surprised it's on Amazon as it's clearly a bootleg but everything I've bought from the same source on eBay has been very good quality.

Yes, those amazon market place sellers certainly know how to charge. But they won't shift many of those at £35 each.

Thanks, Peter. I haven't seen that trailer since I was ten years old...and it's in widescreen, too. But an all star cast in an Ealing film in Technirama and Technicolor produced by Sir Michael Balcon...why on earth isn't it out on a legitimate DVD?

Keep checking Moviemail's website. They seem to have a real commitment to the older, less instantly commercial films we remember fondly from our youth.

10 years old? I bet it was nice watching it,but kind of sad too eh?

Yes, Peter, it was a completely different world way back in January, 1958, travelling on my own on the bus from Weston Coyney to Longton to go into the now long gone ABC Empire cinema with half-a-crown in my pocket, from which came 9d to get into the pictures; 6d for an ABC Film Review magazine; 6d for a little tub of Lyons Maid vanilla ice cream, with a wooden spoon in a small paper packet and 4d to buy some chips while waiting for the bus home after leaving the cinema at 10:15 pm and I still had change out of 2/6d (12 pence in today's money). And of course, if it was an "A" certificate film, I'd stand outside the pictures and ask a man going in to take me in with him. Modern parents would be horrified at the freedom us little boys had to roam and go to the pictures on our own in those days. The supporting film with Davy, by the way, was the now equally unobtainable black and white Western, The Hired Gun, starring Rory Calhoun and Anne Francis.

I am already a Movie Mail customer and they send me their new catalogue regularly. No sign of Davy in it yet, though. I just wonder, with Davy being a Sir Michael Balcon production, as was the later Sammy Going South, if this is the reason why the two films are so difficult to find and release on DVD.

Have seen it on TV and seem to remember there were terrible problems with continuity in the film. It was a hugh commercial faillure and effectively scuppered Secombe's screen career. He was quite good in Jet Storm the otherwise feeble Doctor in Trouble.
