I'm organising my college's Sexual Health Advice and Guidance Week (8-12th February) and want to show a film.

Does anyone have any advice on what would be a good film ?

Not a film, but the episode Contact Tracer from the first series of A Very Peculiar Practice deals with the subject of STD's, and it's based in a university setting.

    name='batman']link: The Clap

An obsessive classical concertgoer (Steve Furst from the Orange ads and Little Britain) wants to be the first clapper at the end of every symphony and sonata. But when he inflicts the clap incessantly on his pianist idol (David Bamber), the tormented virtuoso decides to fight back - with music

    Is that a mis-spelling?

If you want to put the darlings off sex... and their food, try Ken Russell's the MUSIC LOVERS. Every time I think of Glenda Jackson while engaging (attempting, anyway) in conjugals, I reach for my viagra.

The most offputting was Glenda on the grate with the grateful-for-whatever-they-get below.........etc. Now, I've done it...quick, get a bowl, I feel distinctly unwell.

Isn't there an American film from the 1940s(?) about the cure for syphilis. Could be a bit of a winner as I hear it's making a comeback. Syphilis that is!

Dr Ehrlich's Magic Bullet mentions syphilis 357 times though most of the audience probably came away thinking it was a type of flu!

    Damaged Lives (1933)
Although venereal disease was considered as delicate a subject then as it is now, this was nonetheless the third filmed version of Eugène Brieux' 1901 play Les Avariés, known in English-speaking lands as Damaged Lives. Don is a shallow, naïve former ship's officer trying to make the transition to an executive position in the shipping company. He breaks a dinner engagement with his longtime fiancée Joan in order to make a night on the town with one of his company's clients. The client ends up drunk, and at the end of the long night Don ends up with Elise, a woman of dubious reputation who nevertheless lives in an impressive, Art Deco-styled apartment. Although he feels guilty about the affair, Don swiftly marries his sweetheart, only to get the phone call from "the other woman" saying she must see him immediately. Elise confronts Don discreetly that she has given him the gift that keeps on giving, which he refuses to believe. Elise then promptly kills herself, but later Don gets another call from a VD clinic which is treating his wife. After a harrowing visit to a series of "too-far-gone" patients, Don sees the light and agrees to get treatment. But the psychological effect on Joan has different results, and Don must rise to the occasion to save them both. Damaged Lives was initially released in Canada and a few cities in the United States but was stopped by censors in most American towns. In 1937 it was re-released as The Shocking Truth with a 29-minute lecture on VD added onto the end of the film to satisfy censors. Most current video releases do not include this extra material. A week after it opened, a competing domestic version of Damaged Lives also appeared, and with its similar storyline it is often confused with this Canadian film. There is no comparison stylistically, as Edgar G. Ulmer put far more into Damaged Lives than the property and its 18,000-dollar budget deserved. ~ David Lewis, All Movie Guide

    Heart of Midnight (1989)
Heart of Midnight is a involving, well-above-average erotic, psychological thriller directed by Matthew Chapman. Carol (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is recovering from a nervous breakdown. She inherits a nightclub from her uncle and moves in. There she discovers strange and frightening secrets about her uncle and begins to remember details of their past relationship. She battles for her sanity as her surroundings begin to seem menacing and she cannot be sure what is real and what is a hallucination. This above-average film features good performances by Peter Coyote and Jennifer Jason Leigh who have an unusual, intriguing sexual chemistry. Viewers should note a small supporting role by Steve Buscemi. Heart of Midnight, offbeat and interesting, is highly recommended. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

    Mauvais Sang (1986)
This critically acclaimed French drama blends film noir and science fiction elements in a story about a strange and deadly plague. A sexually transmitted disease called STBO is sweeping the country; it's spread by having sex without emotional involvement, and most of its victims are teenagers who make love out of curiosity rather than commitment. While a serum that can treat the disease has been formulated, it's been locked away in an inaccessible government building, and most of those suffering can't get at it. A woman known as "The American" (Carroll Brooks) has hired Marc (Michel Piccoli), who is deep in debt and desperate for cash, to steal the drug; Marc enlists the aid of Alex (Denis Lavant), the teenage son of one of his close friends, to help pull off the robbery. Alex is in love with Lise (Julie Delpy), a girl his age that he's been involved with, but he finds himself attracted to Anna (Juliette Binoche), Marc's younger lover who is determined to stand by her man. Mauvais Sang received the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and the International Fantasy Film Award at the Fantasporto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

    No Greater Sin (1941)
The dangers of the dread venereal disease syphilis are depicted in this earnest drama from the 1940s. The story centers upon an intrepid health commissioner who is out to get rid of the tawdry hookers responsible for spreading the disease. He is assisted by a reporter. In a different subplot a young philanderer contracts the disease and gives it to his pregnant wife. Later a rotten doctor claims that he is cured, but it is not so and the young man returns, picks a fight, and accidentally kills the doctor. Later the young fellow is persuaded into giving his reasons for the killing; he does, and his name is cleared. At the same time, the reporter and health commissioner have fallen in love, and the town council finally gives the go ahead for the commissioner to clean up the streets. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

    Daybreak (1993)
In this chilling made-for-cable-television outing, the population of the United States is nearly wiped out by a sexually transmitted disease. In order to stop its spread, those infected are sequestered in special camps. To make sure no infected person is allowed to go free, a group of vigilantes begins terrorizing city streets in search of carriers. The story is based on an off-Broadway play by Alan Browne. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

We had similar problems about 10/12 years ago at a respite centre/information centre I worked at - sad really.

By the late 90s the 14-18 year olds all thought that AIDs was a thing of the past and nothing to do with them.Hence no interest in safe sex.

The older the film, especially those black and white US info things, will create a decidely wrong impression. "It belongs in the tomb and it's nothing to do with today, when we have medicine and things..." will more than likely be the response.

Good luck in your search, but I would advise to keep it as contemporary as possible, otherwise the message will be lost amidst the laughter and disbelief.
