Has anyone ever seen this 1939 film starring talent scout Carroll Levis? It appears to have never made it to VHS or DVD. I'd like to see it for research purposes.

I have seen it; it's pretty bad, but the only way to see it in this country AFAIK is to book a viewing session at the BFI in London; they have a viewing copy. You may be lucky in finding a copy elsewhere, but otherwise, you're going to have to fly over.

Thanks HUGHJAMPTON! And sorry it took me so long to get back to this. How on earth did you manage to post that clip? The reason I ask is that my purpose in trying to view the film is that I'm writing a biography of Marian McPartland, the British jazz pianist who has spent most of her career in the U.S. Back in the day, Marian played for Carroll Levis on the road, in 1940 and 1941. She also became romantically involved with David Delmonte, who appears as one of the "Discoveries" in the 1939 film. Do you have more of it, or did that bit just happen to be posted on YouTube?



Either way, thanks so much for the link to the opening. Levis really was a terrible actor, wasn't he? I managed to get hold of The Brass Monkey (1948) and he's just as stiff in that as he is in this one.
