I have a five year old nephew about to visit. A smart little chap who lives in Normandy. Which version of The Wind In The Willows should I watch with him ? I feel the Python Posse version too dark, with all its fascist antagonists. Any suggestions ?

Does it have to be the Wind in the Willows? Can't that wait until he's old enough to read the book and enjoy it properly. The Cosgrove Hall versions are fun but this one is absolutely sublime - though not perhaps for a 5 year old.

It's one of those many books that was written for adults but now gets thrust upon children when they're too young to appreciate it.

Yes Captain - my missus quite likes that one - the one I grew up with though was an audio recording from the sixties with Richard Goolden as the mole - narrated by Patrick Wymark and with Norman Shelly as the toad and it's an absolute delight[ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000XDOZH8/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_all]Customer Image Gallery for The Wind in the Willows (Audiobook, 1960 recording)[/ame]

Thanks all and point taken Cap'n. My eldest read the book first, but his younger brother was exposed to a filmed version before reading the book. Being my nephew lives in France and I in NYC, I am not in a position to have much influence on his regular diet when it comes to the arts.

How many of these include chapter 7 - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn ?

That isn't usually included in film & TV versions and can be quite scary for young children

What, the Matt Lucas / Mark Gatiss 2006 version? Good for them if it does

I don't see "Pan" in the cast list

I'd go for the Disney one, Ichabod and Mr Toad. And yes, I was surprised and pleased to see the Matt Lucas version include The Piper at the Gates of Dawn chapter - that's even missing from many editions of the book.

I'd go for this one .... my six year old boy loves it and it is very good. He enjoyed the book and says this is 'just as good'.
