Below is a link to an eBay item the like of which I've not seen before. The seller claims it's a 35mm cinema clipping from the Walt Disney film The Lion King. The strange thing is, the frames have a five perforation pull down instead of the usual four. What 35mm projector currently in use in any cinema could possibly show a film like this? The frame is also very high vertically compared to all the film frames I've ever seen and also appears to be anamorphically squeezed. I have captured this frame and stretched it out horizontially at 2 x 1 on my Laptop using Paint Shop Pro and the image when stretched has an aspect ratio of about 1.85:1. It's certainly a very strange way of showing a film. All the other modern 35mm cinema films I've seen have the usual four perforations per frame pull down, which has been standard since the beginning of cinema. So is this a made up image by the seller or a genuine peice of modern cinema film?

Graeme, that's so strange I can't figure out what it's about. Gay artwork for UFO? I didn't know there was anyone Gay in it. That Frank Sidebottom looks odd, though. His disguise would come in handy if he ever robbed a bank.

Frank is a comedy hero - but "odd" is a very good word for him. Mrs Merton started on his radio show and album back in the 80s!

I think "Gay" here is just a name. I might be wrong. I mean it's just a DVD of UFO and a picture he's done! You can buy other pictures on Ebay too - one is of him after chemotherapy (in real life he has just been diagnosed with cancer) and he's selling it entirely for charity.

Crazy bloke - but a nice one I think - his Mr Kite on the Sgt Pepper 20th anniversay record is an absolute delight! Less good, but still mad, is his cover of Flying! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItQqQAoRkj0&feature=related]YouTube - Frank Sidebottom Flying[/ame]

There have been many perforation and gauge variations over the years - check this out:

Yes, Alan, I know about that, having worked for many years as a projectionist, but that film wouldn't run on any of the standard 35mm projectors that I ever knew or worked with. Most of the films that had more than four perfs per frame each side, like the horizontally running negatives of VistaVision and Technirama, were printed as standard 4-perfs per frame each side vertical prints so that they could be run at any cinema. This copy of The Lion King is one that no ordinary cinema could run. I don't think it's real at all.

If you look at the seller's other items Darren you'll see he uses a template and pastes the film cel image onto that. I don't think the template image is supposed to be an accurate representation of the actual strip.

Photographing these cels wouldn't give a very good display picture and I imagine he's used screen caps from a digital slide scanner which would only show the screen image rather than the actual strip itself.

He's sold a lot of cels and has only one negative feedback from some idiot who bought a cel thinking it was a DVD. He didn't even recognise what he got and thought it was a sticker. A bit harsh to give bad feedback but at least he makes it plain what a numpty he is.

Yes, Gogglebox, I myself thought he may be pasting images into a template, as the optical soundtrack recording on the side of each "clipping" looks exactly the same on all his "clips" from The Lion King.

I messaged the seller on ebay and this was his reply:

Hello, the perforation edges are a made up image added to the scan as our scanner does not show the edges (and whould also be the wrong color for the year of the lion king); the cell part of the image is the scan of the cell and i believe the lion king's ratio was 1.66 : 1 - scope , as is a few other titles we have so its not the only one.

    i hope that helps.

    King Regards

    Ant.

    Seems fair to me.

Thanks, Gogglebox. But he says he believes the The Lion King's ratio was 1.66:1 scope. I can assure him that's there's no such thing as 1.66:1 scope. If it was 1.66:1, it would be a non-anamorphic film.
