I haven't seen that one, but I have seen the documentary Nancy Wake Codename: The White Mouse (1987). Nancy took part in that one. The one you mention is a drama about her.

Nancy did some amazing work for SOE, organising the Maquis. She wasn't as glamorous or as tragic as Odette, Violette Szabo or Princess Noor Inayat Khan, the three who were awarded the George Cross and so are better known. But Nancy still risked her life, many times. She was only awarded the George Medal, and the Order of Australia along with the Croix de guerre, the Légion d'Honneur, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a few other gongs.

Thanks Steve, yes I've seen the documentary too that's why I'm intrigued by this film.

As you say largely forgotten now like Christine Granville, whose biography I've just read.

I have seen it - in fact I have it on video tape somewhere, and it is quite good. It reminded me very much of the TV series 'The Secret Army'.

dpgmel... I saw that movie a long time ago, when it was first released so I'm a bit vague about it now, but as best I can recall it was a good movie. Starring two of our best-loved dependables, Noni Hazlehurst and the gorgeous John Waters.

Not forgotten in Australia by any means, at least not by my generation and the previous one. Not forgotten in New Zealand, her birthplace, either. She did deserve a lot more recognition, IMHO. To our shame, Australia and NZ took a long time to recognise her bravery and it wasn't until 2004 that she was made a 'Companion of the Order of Australia', and only this year NZ awarded her the 'RSA Badge in Gold'.

No wonder she preferred to live in Europe.

She will be 97 today week, 30th August.

Extract from Nancy Wake Hero File:

She now lives in the Royal Star and Garter Home for ex-servicemen in Richmond, West London.

Comment: The resistance to the Nazi invasion of France was a movement of many heroes. In the French Section of the SOE alone, 91 men and 13 women gave their lives in the battle against the fascists. Other SOE members like Odette Sansom endured torture and the prospect of death in Nazi concentration camps. French Resistance leader Jean Moulin died on 8 July 1943 after being captured and tortured by the Gestapo. He is now considered a French national hero. Many other French Resistance fighters also perished. Nancy Wake is a symbol of their struggle and their sacrifice.

"I hate wars and violence," she has said, "But if they come I don't see why we women should just wave our men a proud goodbye and then knit them balaclavas."

Thanks Shirl, really pleasing to hear that true bravery has not been forgotten.
