When did JB stop wearing a hat? What was the last film were he wears one in the gun-sight logo sequence.

What odd reasons to have a hat does he have in some films to enable him to do the hatstand trick?

I really want to know this!

I'd have to check the dvd's to find some of these questions, but i noticed the other week that the 'hat stand' trick is performed in For Your Eyes Only. It's clearly a nod back to the Sean films - and i think it's the only time it's ever seen (that hat) in one of Sir Roger's films.

The first gun-barrel sequence to be 'hat less' was Live and Let Die.

Did Sean ever appear in the gun barrel sequence, or was it always Bob Simmons wearing a hat?

I believe Sean did three, "Thunderball", "You Only Live Twice" & "Diamonds are Forever". I think the reason was because they shot the three films in Panavision and that the face would be seen more clearly than in the previous three 'spherical' Bonds.

    That's interesting, thanks.

I seem to remember him doing the hat stand trick with a naval officer's hat in one?

yes, I would say that was from YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. The hat "gag" as it were gets some good mileage in the Bond films and its always slightly different. For example,Bond walks into M's reception area and is about to throw his hat across the room and realizes the hat stand has been moved to just beside the door so he simply places his hat on the stand while looking accusingly at Moneypenny who is mischievously smiling at him. can't remember what film it was though. In another sequence Bond is about to throw the hat and Monepenny stops him, she takes the hat and throws it and it lands perfectly on the hat stand and she and Bond look at each other with raised eyebrows, classic. Lois Maxwell once said that Roger always hit the hat stand first time while Sean needed a few takes to get the hat to land perfectly, she is obviously using this description as an allusion to something else but don't ask me what!

Didn't Lois once say she'd have had Sean as a lover and Roger as a husband?

Apparently Patrick McGoohan turned down doing Bond the second time because they said he couldn't wear the hat.

Lazenby wears the hat in the opening scenes of OHMSS where Bond is following Tracey along the coast road and then removes it as he gets out of the car. He also performs the hat trick as he enters the office and greets Moneypenny.

If you look back at the fifties (almost early JB time) wearing hats outdoors was commonplace for both men and women. Nowadays you'd stick out like a sore thumb in most locations.

You do have to be careful where you stick out like a sore thumb. You can be arrested for it.

Some people look better in a hat than others

Mind you, I have to wear a hat like that if it's at all sunny & if I'm going to be outside for any length of time - to protect my balding pate.
