I watched it yesterday and having not seen it for some time quite enjoyed it. Mind you I'd loved to have seen what Jimmy Sangster. Terrence Fisher & co would have done with the story.

I recall reading, some years ago, that Day of the Triffids (1962) was made in colour, the quality was extremely poor and so it was initailly released in black and white. Copies since show on TV have been in colour. Sounds strange to release a colour film in black and white but having seen it I can understand why they would do so.

It was made in Eastmancolor. That was never particularly effective, but it was a lot simpler & cheaper than Technicolor

Agreed, markrgv, I've always enjoyed it. I think it contains some really memorable scenes - the airliner in particular. The film deviates from the book, admittedly, but I much prefer it to the most recent adaptation.

When I saw the film in 1962 on general release it was in colour.

Am I confusing this film with the TV series or was there another 'Triffid' film out there somewhere?
Two versions here. The lighthouse, salt water remedy etc was the original 1962 film (I think it is available free to download somewhere) The Isle Of Wight ending was a TV version where the 'goodies' gathered to research a solution yet to be found while the 'badies' got their comeuppance on the mainland.
