Default Questions About "On Approval"

I am looking into buying a used video or DVD of the 1944 film comedy "On Approval", and I am curious as to any opinions on the film.

It has a high reputation, but I have never seen it and it has been difficult to obtain; it is now much more available thanks to amazon.com, and at a fairly reasonable price. I would appreciate any reviews, thoughts, etc.

thanks,
Tim

ON APPROVAL was originally a play, one of the most successful of the Aldwych Farces put on in London in the 1920s/30s. It has been filmed twice; in 1930 with the original theatre cast (Tom Walls, Robertson Hare, Yvonne Arnaud) and in 1944 with Clive Brook, Roland Culver and Beatrice Lillie. I have not seen either, but both versions score 5 out of a possible 6 in David Quinlan's "British Sound Films"

The 1944 version crops up on tv here from time to time and i can recommend it. it is a bit stagey at times though, but a good film nevertheless. go ahead and buy it, i think you'll enoy it.

question for anyone who knows about these things: is the earlier version (1930) available? i love the tom walls/yvonne arnaud films.

Yes, but not many. I thought this would be a good place for informed opinion. Sorry if this is not a good idea -

It was a good idea, but it doesn't look like many people know of it. I certainly didn't

As Steve says, this is the place to ask. If we do not know the answer now we will in due course so keep in touch. There was a television play from years ago that I could not trace until I came on this board. Good luck and keep posting.
