Default Possession

I am in search of the main credits - director, producer, writer, director of photography, art director, composer, editor - and the cast (which will be brief) of a short British film called POSSESSION. This has nothing to do with the novel by Antonia Byatt or the feature film derived from it. Its plot concerns a young married couple whose newly-acquired (though old) house proves to be very haunted indeed. Caroline Langrishe played the young wife; Stan Stennett played a slightly sinister red herring; I forget who played the young husband. A couple of removal men were probably all the remainder of the cast. Caroline Langrishe has not replied to my letter. Stan Stennett has. He thinks the film was shown in support of the Bob Rafelson version of THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. This must have been shortly before supporting programmes vanished altogether. It is also, unfortunately, after the Monthly Film Bulletin stopped reviewing all films released in this country. The British Film Institute knows nothing of the film. Can anyone help? - Anthony Baker

In BFI Monthly Film Bulletin, July 1981, page 146, there is a list of 5 New British Short Films. One of these is called POSSESSIONS, distributed by ITC, length 27 mins , cert AA. No further details given. Could this be your film ?

Yes, I'm sure that must be it. But how frustrating that there are no further details. Even more frustratingly, Stan Stennet (who once owned several cinemas in Wales) wrote that he has a print of the film in his garage. He did not offer to transcribe the cast and credits for me. - Anthony Baker
