Default Auditioning for a british movie

I have got an audition for a film, but I have never been to one and dont know what to expect!!!!!!

PLEASE HELP!!!

FIRST;

I have been sent the script and a list of charaters I can try for. My instructions are to:

"Just pick a character you would like to try for and a monologue or dualogue for that character"

Does that mean make one up myself of find somthing out of the script I have been sent? I am assuming I am expected to find a dialogue from the script, but if this is the case am I allowed to make a few adjustments to the wording of it? As I feel some of the wording of the scenes that I have choosen could be much better if I were to make some slight adjustments OR would this idea reduce my chances of succeeding in the audition?

SECOND;

When performing the scene, if it requires props which arn't there should I just pretend to have them?

THIRD AND FINAL QUESTION;

What are audition conditions usually like? Is it a board of people or just one, is it friendly or cold environment? And do you have any tips for getting through?

It will be really cool to hear your opinions and experiences that you have had in your auditions. I look forward to your posts

Hiya Tony,
A couple of Questions..
How did you come by this audition....I've done many auditions but when they sent me a script it was for a certain part. (I couldn't pick the parts I wanted to do) Are the people who sent you the script legit. (Never send anyone upfront monies)
Are you a member of Equity Union..(they look after you)

Read all of the script and see what character you feel happiest with and quote the words from the script. (The writer sat up all night and wrote the words)
The director might let you alter some of them.
When you do the audition act it as you think it should be......and good luck.

Aitch,

Wink

Thanks for your responce First I will answer your questions as you have been so good as to answer mine, but they will sound odd, well probably. But please don't judge me until you read the folling paragraph to the answers, it will make a little more sence then.

I came accross the part by chance, from a site called starsinyoureyes.com (.co.uk, cant remember which one it is) As for being legit, I wouldn't know how to find out, but I definatly don't intend to pay them any money for "the priviledge". The actors equity thing is also a bit of a mystery to me, I don't know anything about that either.

Right a quick history of how this came to be;

I enjoy watching films (like many others). After watching some low budget movies I one day decided I could write a script which is better than many of the movies we such on such channels as the horror channel and true movies etc. So I started, after a while (getting near it's completion) I looked into how to get it produced. While I was doing that I found said website and joined just out of curiosity. Later they offered full access to their site for free for a limited time, during that time this role became avaliable on there. It mentioned somthing about fight sceens (I have a long, long history in many martial arts and creating staged fights), so I sent my CV detailing my background offering my skills. An offer came back for an audition, which brings us to now.

Does it sound dodgy to you? if so why? NO MONEY HAS BEEN REQUESTED OR EVEN MENTIONED!!!!!!! The site I am pretty confident is legit, but my knowledge is rather limited on this subject. I would love for this to be an opportunity to give movie making a try, but am not willing to risk, well... anything!!!!

Well that's everything oh just one last thing!! if it is above board. I like the idea of the script, and how it pans out, yet the writing itself is DIRE!!!!!!! do you think constructive critism about it would be taken badly. (I know my acting is limited, but I know what sounds good in a script and how to improve this one. Yet I would probably come over as an arrogant T**T if I suggest anything, should I just go with the script as is?)

thanks for your help so far and I look forward to your reply

WARNING! I really don't want to be a Jobes comforter on this, BUT. Please listen to AITCH, his advice will be sound. Most actors belong to a Professional body. It offers protection, and sets the fees applicable for parts. Now...Films do not Audition. (Theatre has Auditions, Commercials offer Castings) Film offers MEETINGS or INTERVIEWS. Any genuine Film company would know this. Legit Film offers do not come out of the ether. Beware of working for nothing. Beware of Scams. There is an old saying in this business of ours: "It has scam artists, crooks, conmen and snakes...Then there's the downside! Contact EQUITY for advice. If you have no joy, and you wish, then please pm me for advice. Although I am sure all your questions will have been answered by Aitch.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...YOU MAY GET IT!

I can only echo the words of kelp and am available to be PM'd as well. Be very careful. It doesn't sound totally legit to me. Aitch is a top guy and has so much experience that his advice will be worth listening to. Whatever happens ... good luck!

A bit of digging around and I came up with this which may be the site Tony was referring to.

Stars In My Eyes - audition & entertainment opportunity portal

Perhaps those with some experience might take a look and see what they think.

All the best

It looks like an online small ads site. It's full of the type of of ad you see regularly in the classified section of The Stage.

eg ...

3 Actors (1M/2F) wanted for TiE Tour
Information 1 male actor and 2 female actors are wanted for a national tour of an award winning TiE Production
"Bully's Paradise" is an award winning production for primary age children. Applicants must have a genuine interest in educational drama for children. Strong improvisational skills required.
1 Male Actor - playing age 20 to 35
2 Female Actors - playing age 15 to 25
Contracts run 12th May to 10th July 2008
Average take home wage £320 per week - excellent accommodation provided
Applicants must be aged 23 or over and hold a full driving licence

Stars In My Eyes - audition & entertainment opportunity portal

I looked at this site and wondered how they make thier money ?

Now I don't want to turn Tony (or anyone else) from going in the biz but I learned years ago that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Another scam is the auditions for extras normally held at a hotel.
An old boy I know who works at Asda told me that he had an audition at a hotel (he found the ad in a local paper) and they told him if he paid a joining fee (it included a photo session) of £150 they could get him a couple of days work a week (at £100 per day) as an extra on a top soap. HE PAID.

NEVER PAY MONEY TO GO TO WORK,,,THEY PAY YOU....

Here endeth the lesson...

I totally agree with Aitch. I have only held auditions to cast some one, but this does not ring quite true. Just research as much as you can, and take care.
