Default Film or Movie...

I notice this site is called BritMovie...the home of UK films! You may think this a tad pedantic and i suppose in the great scheme it's not exactly one of the great unanswerd questions, but is it movie or film? For me it has always been (and always will be) film, movies were/are for Hollywood and gum chewing yanks. It makes me cringe to hear someone say "fancy taking in a movie"

Definitely 'film'. Does Britmovie sound better than Britfilm? Possibly. I seem to remember that when I was a child some people called films 'flicks'. (Derived from flickers I believe.) How about 'Britflick'. Doesn't sound too bad!!

It's been mentioned before.
See the Should it be 'Britmovie?' thread

We always refered to the pictures as the flicks when we were kids, I still do occasionally and people say...the what?...Philistines.

No, I've never heard them called philistines before.

At last! Someone(s) who refuse to bow to the dreadful Americanization of our language!

Films they are and films they should remain! "Movie" or "Movies" is such a dreadful term and, quite frankly, makes me feel ill whenever I hear people refer to (in particular) a British film!

Films, films, films. Go to the flicks, the cinema, the films, but, for pity's sake, let's drop the dreaded "M" word. It is so........ EUCH!!

I quite understand why this site ended up being called as it is but agree that the M***** word is an abomination. I'm pretty sure I've never used it in writing and I know I've never used it in speech.

Default America & Britain

I live in NYC, which is amost a nation unto itself, but I've done far bit of poking about in the USA. It's extremely rare to hear them referrred to anything other than "movies", the word "film" is hardly ever used. Me I prefer "flicks" or "the pictures", but these phrases are completely lost on most people I know and so I use "film", more than I'd like to. But I have been known to use "movies" when dealing with small children. America and Britain two nations divided by a common language !

I have and always use the terms "flicks" or "the pictures" myself.

Default "Film" or "Movie"?

To my mind, a "film" is a serious work with artistic pretentions, such as those directed by Ingmar Bergman, for example; a "movie" is everything else.
