Default Views of British Cinema

Can anyone help me with this question?

Discuss the view that british films regardless of thier quality, struggle to achieve commercial success?

Thanks

Stephen Frears replied to a similar jibe from Truffaut about British Film with: "Bollocks!"

Actually it depends on how you define "commercial success". Traditionally one view has been that anything Mr & Mrs Mid-West America don't understand is going to fail at the box office. But you could also argue that, if the main movie-going demographic is 16-25 males, the ipod generation is going to be different from those preceding it and their tastes more unpredictable.

I also think it's a poor or lazily expressed question (define "struggle"?, what is a "British film" in this context?) but you could have some fun picking it to bits.

Maybe a professional would say that if it doesn't achieve commercial success it must have been rubbish anyway. Quality will out?

Any professionals around?
