Default Films about the miners strike?

The first one I can remember was Brassed Off in 1996 followed by Bily Elliott in 2000. Surely there must have been some in the 1980s?

Brassed Off wasn't actually about the 1984/85 strike - it was about the later pit closures. There's the Comic Strip's The Strike and an episode of Our Friends in the North was about it, I think.

"The Strike" was pretty good with Al Pacino as Arthur Scargill and Meryl Streep as his wife.

What makes you think Thatcher has got a conscience? As someone who was there that day and was lucky enough to come away with just a few bruises, I can tell you the news didn't show half of what went on.

Anyway, back to the subject, there was a play shown on TV about the strike but I can't remember any details or when it was shown other than that it was before 1991. I can remember a scene in the WMC where the members were talking about coal versus nuclear power but nothing else comes to mind. Maybe someone out there knows more.

There's also a tedious art film called Roccinate starring John Hurt which I had the misfortune to see at the London Film Festival one year. It features Hurt wondering across various deserted country cottages whilst the miner's strike is alluded to in the background. I think the point of the film is the old cliche that we don't have a "green and pleasant land" any more.

After the screening various members of the audience gave the director some stick about how obscure it was and that miners wouldn't understand it - a bit patronising I thought since they wouldn't be the only ones !!

The Big Man references it too, but not very effectively.
