Default London Taxi Trade Documentary

I would like to ask if anyone knows of any films that were made about the London taxi cab trade.

There were the British Transport Films which concentrated mainly on the Railways and sometimes covered buses and shipping, but nothing to my knowledge on taxi hire cabs.

Any answers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

All the best - FX3.

Don't know but in our local paper, The Welwyn-Hatfield Times, this week we discovered that our wonderful council has been giving Cab licences to people with criminal records for drink-driving, kidnap & rape....................

Yes, it ran in 1963-63 on the BBC.
He was also a cabbie in Three Hats for Lisa (1965)
And he ran a cab company in Carry on Cabby (1963)
And he was a taxi driver in Father's Doing Fine (1952)

Well spotted. Many thanks for the information. I enjoyed BBC 4's Routemaster Night, so I am sure the Cab Night will be good.

I am quite shocked to read about cab licenses being given to people who have had convictions for serious crimes. It's unbelievable! It's really beyond a joke!

What is the council going to say when one of these cab drivers commits a serious crime whilst working as a licensed taxi driver, for which they have a past record for? The usual, I suppose "we will learn from our lessons" etc.

This sort of problem arose in Greater Manchester a couple of years ago. Some black cab drivers with convictions were discovered and even more 'private hire' car drivers. However, I think the council's vetting procedures have been tightened up since then.
A bigger problem recently has been incidents of bogus 'taxi drivers' pretending to be genuine - some just to make money, but others for more dangerous reasons, especially when picking up unsuspecting female passengers late at night.
The local paper is constantly printing warnings to the public to make sure the taxi carries council licensing plates front and back.

"I want to be a sailor - sailing out to sea"

Didn't John Mills play a cabbie in an early film?
