I checked out the imdb today and discovered that my part (Prompter) is credited but the actor name given is Jon Rumney (who seems to have a career dating back to the late fifties). Is this one of those names they use for unknown actors? Can anyone enlighten me?

No, it definitely isn't what they do.
But if someone was adding the credits from the film and saw the name "Jon Rumney" and saw that there was already an actor in the database with that name, it's very easy to assume that that is the person in this film.
If your name (or the name you appeared under) is Jon Rumney then what you need to do is a
Name Split
That will finish up with two entries in the database, for Jon Rumney (I) and Jon Rumney (II). The Roman numerals have no special meaning. Some very famous people have quite high Roman numerals. They are purely to let the system separate out the different credits and they should be in the order that the names were added to the database so this other Jon Rumney will be Jon Rumney (I) and you will be Jon Rumney (II)
If you didn't appear under the name Jon Rumney then you need to do a name correction.
Go to the page for
Esther Kahn (2000), hit the Update button near the bottom of the page and select:
Cast ... Correct / Delete
Then change the name Jon Rumney to whatever name you appeared under.
But you say you were an extra. Did you get an on-screen credit?
