I'm on a hunt for some movies made in the UK, in the 1950s. There was a series of them i think. Rob Roy, Sword and the Rose, Robin Hood. Does anyone know if any more were made in this series?
ALSO i seem to remember a film of the same ilk and era starring Tony Curtis, that i think was made in the UK. Does anyone have any memory of this? Many thanks. linda dp |

He was in Trapeze with Burt Lancaster, I believe that was made in the UK as it was directed by Carol Reed and had Sid James in it.
Those Sword and the Rose, etc that you mentioned were made for Disney I believe as I read that they were in the James Robertson-Justice biography |

Robin Hood (1952), The Sword and the Rose (1953) and Rob Roy (1953) were all Walt Disney productions made in the UK and starring Richard Todd, I don't know if they were intended to be a series.
Other similar Disney films made in the UK around this time were Treasure Island (1950) and Kidnapped (1960) both stories by Robert Louis Stevenson |

![]() It's not the best film he, or anyone else, ever did. At least Torin got to play good Sir James Poor old David Farrar was trying to break into Hollywood at this time and the only parts he could get were wicked squires, or "friend of hero" roles. No wonder he gave up after a few years of those. Steve |

That's a mullet that'd make Bono (circa 1984) proud. ![]() The Richard Todd films by Disney should be easy enough to track down. I have all three (is anyone surprised?). By God, Toddy's pretty in Robin Hood. But they're all cracking good fun.

Yes, I admire him and his work very much. Sorry we (the USA) "stole" him from you guys - maybe he just felt he had better acting opportunities in the states after the war. |

In my younger days (and before you ask, it was the fifties) we used to have a hair-cut called "THE Tony Curtis style". All of us boys wanted to look like this guy, he was the best looking actor in Hollywood at the time. So, it wasn't a mullet, it was an original hair design called after the actor.
That is unless you look back at Francis Llederer several years earlier.

Well, you'll get no argument from me about the 'best looking guy in Hollywood' tag.
But wasn't this the Tony Curtis Haircut, rather than the above variation?

Yayyy! Black Shield of Falworth - Hooray, that's the one! Now i shall try to get a copy of it, plus the 3 Disney films with Richard Todd. (Robin Hood, Sword and the Rose, Rob Roy).
They "seem" to be a series, as they all stared Todd and James RJ. But one starred Joan Rice and the other 2 starred Glynis Johns. Does anyone know of any reason for this? best, linda dp Last edited by dupret; 24-08-2008 at 01:44 PM.. |
