Thank You. ( I'm in a great "searching details" period !)

We had an involved debate on the PnP email list a few years ago on this subject; we neglected to ask Frith Banbury, the actor in question, before he died this year. I think, off the top of my head, that the consensus was " T.d'A F "....one assumes the characters initials...not that we ever got his full name, he is always referred to as 'Baby Face Fitzroy'. We assumed the d'A F stands for " d'Arcy Fitzroy" and T was his christian name's initial.

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Thanks penfold for the answer, now I know for the initials, but still don't understand, too Brit-British for me !!

You don't understand it, nor does anyone else understand it completely

He's quite a childish character. He is still known by his nickname from school - "Baby face". He wants to go and play tennis rather than work.

It seems reasonable that he would write his initials in the steamed up window.
We see it as "mirror writing" and he wipes it off almost as soon as he's written it.

As penfold said, that was the result of a long debate and discussion in the P&P email group and that's the best we could come up with.

It does seem to fit with everything that we know about the character
