Default Who put the "get" in Get Carter?

Now, as everybody knows Get Carter was based on Ted Lewis's excellent little gangster thriller novel Jack's Return Home.

But I picked up an old second hand copy in paperback recently with Michael Caine in various shots from the film on the cover. It was a 1971 printing and it is entitled: "Carter".

No "Get" in sight!

Quote:
Michael Caine and Geraldine Moffatt as they appear in a scene from MGM/EMI's new film CARTER
it says under a pic of the bathroom scene.

I wonder at what point the more effective "Get Carter" became current? Obviously this film tie in paperback was released at a slightly earlier stage. Are there any posters for "Carter" floating about out there?

It is a UK paperback by the way - price 5/ or 25p!

This is from a Get Carter website ....

"Ted Lewis's novel Jack's Return Home. That was its title when it was sent to me in 1969 with an offer to script and direct it as my first cinema flick. It was to star Michael Caine. Carter's The Name topped the title page on my first draft. The novel was duly published in 1970 with its original title: then republished in 1971 as Carter. Strange, because by then the film was out and was called Get Carter."

Mike Hodges from an interview in Crime Time magazine. The above extract would imply it was Hodges (who wrote the screenplay) who christened the film Get Carter.

Thanks for that Bats!

Obviously a cock-up on the planning front in the merchandising and publicity dept. Or a delay at the printers. Daft to have a film tie-in novel displaying and advertising the wrong film title!

All men leak.

Didn't Ted Lewis have something to do with "Yellow Submarine" as well ?

So it says on Wiki, but no mention on IMDB. Anybody know for sure?

Jack Carter returned for two more Lewis novels - Jack Carter and the Law (a.k.a. Jack Carter's Law) and Jack Carter and the Mafia Pigeon .

His ending in the original novel is more ambiguous than in the film.

He worked in animation for part of his career and this entry claims that was his contribution to Yellow Submarine:-

One of ex-patients (now deceased) was an animator on Yellow Submarine. She drew me a lovely picture of a cat which is proudly displayed in my house.
