Default ideas please: smokescreens in movies

Hi there,
Can anyone recommend a good smokescreen scene (any kind of movie -- but I suppose war is most likely).
Many thanks,
Cathy

In "Where Eagles Dare".
The scene takes place over dinner in the castle. A certain American General George Carnaby (Robert Beatty) is revealed by Major Smith (Richard Burton) to be really none other than "a second rate actor" called Cartwright Jones.
All part of an intricate plan to obtain details of German agents working in Britain.

Thanks! That's great. I guess that's a metaphorical smokescreen, though, right? I'm thinking on a less sophisticated non-metaphorical level but didn't make that clear, sorry. Can you recommend a good smoke camouflage scene -- ships or tanks concealed by smoke, that kind of thing?

If you're looking for scenes in which a key event is hidden by smoke, surely the most famous one is the end of the Railway Children?

You could also have a look at Convoy, San Demetrio, London and the destroyer attack in Sink the Bismark.

Um, I know this is probably contrary to forum etiquette, but is anyone else dying to know why Cathy is looking for films with smokescreens - or am I just a nosey parker?

Thanks. These are great. (I'm looking for smokescreens as references for an artist's film on smoke in all its forms.)

Sherlock Holmes also used a smokescreen in the story 'A Scandal in Bohemia' and is included in the Brett TV series ..... the same ploy also was used in one of the Rathbone Holmes films, but I can't remember which one.

I wondered about that. The Graf Spee tried using a smokescreen in the real battle, but I don't recall much of a one being used in the film.

In books, there's a C.S. Forrester novel about the Royal Navy fighting the Italians in the Mediterranean in WWII which has great usage of a smokescreen. The RN destroyers keep nipping out of the smokescreen to hit the larger, clumsier Italian ships. They fire a few torpedoes and then dive back into the smokescreen. Shame I can't remember the title

Steve
IIRC it's used by the British when John Gregson's ship is crippled by shellfire .

Ah yes, the excitable Leading Seaman on the bridge of the Ajax refers to it. But as the Exeter is steaming towards the Graf Spee at the time, the smoke he's laying behind him doesn't do much good tactically. And I'm not sure if he's deliberately making smoke or if that's just from the multiple fires on board
