23 Durham Street, Stockton on Tees on 6 December 1888. Although I seem to remember hearingthat the houses in this street have been renumbered since then.

slightly off subject again . hay was a serious astronomer and discovered a mark on saturn in the 1930s .he would have had a hell of a telescope to do that ,the kind that would be housed in its own special outbuilding and would have cost a fortune to build [ he was on film stars wages ]. does it still exist ?

I think it did in the early 1990s - it's not that far down the roadfrom me and I used to know someone who lived a few houses along. I have a vague memory of him going on an exploratory mission round his neighbour's back garden to see if it was still there - though to be honest this could just have been something we planned over a drink. One day I really will look for myself...

Will Hays observatory is situated on the A41 not far from me at Mill Hill.I visited it a few years ago when it was open for Open House.

Really? It must have been moved then (which saves me sneaking round someone's back garden!) - he did the sun-spot discovery thing when he was living in South London. Did he move it, I wonder. How big is it?

Hi.
Yes. I have passed the observatory at Mill Hill. I believe these days it can be seen from the M1 motorway. I do not know if there were any others that he had connections with. There was also talk some years ago, that Will Hay did for awhile, live in Hemel Hempstead.

Hay lived at 45 The Chase, Norbury SW16 in 1933 when he discovered the Saturn spot.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !
