Default HMS Ark Royal (?)

I recall many, many, many years watching an old British flagwaver set just before and during the Second World War. The film opens with a panoramic shot of a shipyard (I am sure TYNESIDE came up) and it was about the HMS Ark Royal. Sorry to be vague, but any ideas?

Ships with Wings. (Suicide Squadron in the US )

Your'e correct about Tyneside.

Real footage from the Ark Royal is used in the film, although she was built in Birkenhead, not the North East.

It has a barmy plot that makes 'The Guns of Navarone' look like a documentary, although it's still entertaining and worthwhile if only for the real life footage.

I have it from DD video.

:)

It's got some lovely model shots that a 5 year old would be proud of and some dodgy back projection shots as well.

But even despite all of that, it's sort of worth watching.

Cheers,
I wasn't sure whether my memory was playing tricks on me as regards the TYNESIDE bit, because I was sure the Ark Royal was built in Merseyside.
Again thanks for the info. On the whole, the flagwavers of that time did what its says on the tin. I don't think the makers were eyeing up Oscar glory!

Cheers everyone,
It was built in Birkenhead, Cammell Lairds check out this photo

http://www.bwpics.co.uk/gallery/arkroyal.html

It is by a Liverpool photographer Edward Chambre Hardman. His studio is now a museum, untouched since he died, in Rodney Street. His photos b/w are worth having a look at on any of the web sites dedicated to him.

That'll be the 4th Ark Royal. The vessel that saw action during WWII was the 3rd and torpedoed after only 3 years of service.

My only memory of the 4th was Pete n Dud on the deck. wink (and that awful Rod Stewart record)

I believe there was an Ark Royal in the days of Henry VIII.
