Default Channel 4 red triangle films!

Does anyone here remember the channel 4 films that had a red triangle logo to 'warn' us that they were disturbing films?

First of all, what films were shown?

Secondly, one of these red triangle films was a French colour film that had no speech, only grunting and also was about furniture being thrown out of windows!

Anyone remember this?

Cheers.

Jeremy

That was THEMROC, which was easily the highlight of the series (it was the first chance many of us had to see the film); the only other film I can remember them showing (in what was one of the most ludicrous ideas ever dreamed up) is Antononi's IDENTIFICATION OF A WOMAN.

Ahhhhh....tthe great 'Mary Whitehouse nightmare' idea of the 'Red Triangle' season! Memories!

THEMROC caused a lot of fuss because of the cannibalisation of the Policeman.

Others shown were "Jubilee" which is worth watching for the cast alone, especially with the 'now and then'look with Toyah.

Hopper's directind effort "Out of the Blue".

Hopper starring "Tracks", where the molestation of the woman on the bus caused trouble.

I think "Sebastian" was also screened but with the hard-on famously cut off the bottom of the screen.
Something they craftily 'forgot' to do on the excellent doc "Sex and the Censor".

In reality, the odd scene aside, the films were nothing special in the explicit content stakes and were mostly dull and pretentious.

I do fondly remember staying awake for them and craftily watching them on the TV in my bedroom though!

You only have to look at the fact the much maligned and 'disgusting' Red Triangle films have alll since shown up on Ch4 as simply normal film transmissions, just like any other movie, to see how times have changed.

Can't it be brought back - not for films but for TV trash like Big Brother etc, with the legend: 'this tv programme can damage your mental health'

What concerned me at the time was that C4 was using similar symbology as the Nazis. In the Nazi concentration camps prisoners had to wear different coloured triangles to denote their status: yellow for Jews, pink for gays etc.Red was for political prisoners.

It's obviously to do with red triangle warning marks on road signs.

I think pretty much all the films you mention contest your evaluation. Not all are 100% successful I admit, but OOTB is some sort of masterpiece and the Jarman's (probably his best films), THEMROC and TRACKS are all works of interest.

Well.."OOTB" was pretty good yes, "Tracks" was mostly self indulgent arse, and a best Jarman film is pretty much like saying a best car crash that you are in.
But "Jubilee" was at least enjoyable on a trash level then, and as an historical curio now.

I was about 15 at the time hence particularly interested in the promise of naked female flesh on TV! (kids these days don't know how lucky they are) I can't now remember many of the films - Tenue de Soiree was one I think. I believe they dropped the red triangle when viewers became disillusioned that it so rarely delivered the goods, so to speak.

If I remember rightly the red triangle did not appear on the screen until just prior to the supposed possible offensive scene.

Would it have been better if the red triangle could have been controlled by ourselves with a remote control. It would have been like the first video games in the pubs(table tennis). Trying to second guess where the first genitalia would appear and then dashing the red across to the offending scene. This would have the added advantage of being able to use it on politician's faces, djs who were boring and chidren on Blue Peter who were many, many times more intelligent than I was.

Do you mean the 1968 film starring Dirk Bogarde? I've never heard of that appearing (or not appearing). The BBFC site says it was given an "A" certificate - but it does also say that it was cut (but it doesn't say what, or how much was cut) so I suspect that if it was filmed it was never released with that "part" showing.

No no...That may be my fault as i missed the 'e' off the end. The Derek Jarman film "Sebastiane".
