Default A Weekend With Lulu (1962)

I have never seen this film but I'm told it is a very good comedy made in the "Carry On" style.
'A Weekend With Lulu' (1962) has a great cast of Brit comedy talent including Sid James, Bob Monkhouse, Leslie Phillips, Irene Handl ect.. I believe even well known pianist Russ Conway appears.
The story apparantly revolves around a caravan trip to France. The 'Lulu' in question is the caravan.
Has anyone seen this film lately? If so, how do you rate it? Is it available for purchase?

Cheers

Dave.

I believe this comedy was made by Hammer Films for Columbia Pictures. This is one of a list of thirty odd Hammer titles that Sony owns, unless they didn't renew copyright. Except for "The Gorgon", "Taste of Fear","Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll" "Fanatic!""Stranglers of Bombay" and one or two others, Sony don't seem to have anything planned for them in the forseeable future.

Ugly Duckling isn't missing - prints still exist, safely tucked away. There just isn't a copy in circulation.

Not as old as you'd imagine..

I know a bloke who had a slow smooch with her on the dancefloor a few years ago - and let's just say he embarassed himself down below!

No, it wasn't me!

Default Shirley, the Stunner

I was delighted to see A Weekend with Lulu on TCM recently. Some of its plot devices are a bit hard to swallow, as when the four Brits find themselves transported from England to France after unwittingly parking caravan Lulu for the night on a railway flat-truck bound for Lyon. On the other hand, one of the four is Shirley Eaton, who repeatedly distracts the viewer by her patented bra-&-panties pose.

At another point in the film, the Brits elude French police by pulling off the road next to a haywagon. When police drive by a moment later, the entire caravan has been covered with hay, converting it into a giant haystack. Quite unbelievable - but then again, there's Shirley.

Finally, the four win airfare home by fixing a bet on the Tour de France. While Bob Monkhouse takes bets, Leslie Phillips suddenly emerges from a sideroad on a bike, in full cycling kit, in front of the pack & wins the stage. No way! But, hey, there's Shirley.

A believable device the four use repeatedly is to thrust Shirley among the Frenchmen & then, while she simpers & coos, steal what they need, whether it's a basket of food or petrol from a lecherous count's limo. None of the four speaks French, but Shirley is fluent in the international language of hotness. (It reminds me of Modesty Blaise's distraction technique called "The Nailer" - though unlike Modesty, Shirley at least retains her underwear.)

At the end of A Weekend with Lulu, I realized the filmmakers had deployed the same method on me for advancing the plot that the characters in the movie use to keep moving homeward. I'd been quite happily distracted by Shirley the Stunner.

No but Life for Ruth is being released. Weekend with Lulu only just resurfaced with a TV showing.

This film was recently shown on Turners classic movies in Canada. Columbia pictures, who have the rights to the film, must have remastered it. For a 45 year old film, picture quality and sound were excellent. Film was in b&w. This film was a blast from beginning to end. I could send you a copy either pal system or ntsc. cheers, ronald larkin
