Default Edgar Wallace Mysteries

Haven't been shown on TV for simply ages....
Aaaarghh!!!
I used to love these short British crime films.
It's a crime they have been absent for so long!

You, Sir, are a man of taste and distinction.

Many of us on this forum are fans of both Edgar Wallace and the other Merton Park productions. I'm also very fond of the German Edgar Wallace films, even if my German isn't up to understanding them yet.

I'm working on it - I just passed my Open University begginner's German course with distiction (and still I can't understand the blinking films!).

Too true! I remember seeing 'em on the flicks. I don't remember the frequency of them though. Did they make one per month or whatever? thumbs_u

Good morning boys.

The Edgar Wallace's are superb stuff.

Its great seeing many people who went on to become stars in the early part of their career.

I don't think they were exactly every month, but not far off. The 1st link below gives theatrical release dates and links to IMDB.
The bottom link has some ep. synopses.
Then there are many other Merton films of a similar ilk and vintage, not carr ying the EW banner, such as "Urge To Kill" and "Man In The Back Seat", "Crossroads To Crime",etc.
The Scotland Yards are also good, and then don't forget The Scales Of Justice.
A DVD release would be great; some hope!!!!
Here are some links>>>

*EDIT*

I understand that different films were released in different areas at the same time???

As I recall, they were Anglo Amalgamated releases and invariably went out on ABC circuit release as supporting features to Anglo Amalgamated or Warner-Pathe features such as Watch Your Stern; No Kidding; The Rebel; Raising the Wind; Twice Around the Daffodils; Carry on Cruising and A Kind of Loving, ect.

Although some of them supported other ABC releases of features from other companies such as Paramount's Blue Hawaii.

Yes, my mother; who saw EW's at the cinema in the 1960's; confirms the same.
Her 'local' was an ABC.

I'm pretty sure that all Merton Park stuff was distributed via Anglo Amalgamated.

Yes chaps, you're spot on ; they were indeed Anglo Amalgamated releases for the ABPC circuit. Currently owned by Canal Plus at Pinewood IIRC - and don't we wish they'd do something with them ?

Wasn't MAN IN THE BACK SEAT something like THEATRECRAFT PRODUCTIONS ? They used to employ Derren Nesbitt quite a lot.

Nearly, 'Independent Artists Productions'
Derren Nesbitt, also Keith Faulkner gained employment by them.
Leslie Parkyn and Julian Wintle were also involved in many of their productions, also the EW "The Malpas Mystery" The only EW not produced by Jack Greenwood. Many think this was the pilot for the EW run (presumably contracted out to IAP by Merton)

The Edgar Wallace films were often far more entertaining than the feature films they supported...with the rare exception of films such as A Kind of Loving.

The German Edgar Wallace films have recently been coming out in DVD Box Sets in Germany, many with English language options. Available from amazon.de - I plan to indulge at some point.

Ah! Thats good news, I have never seen any of the German EW films.

Its a shame that the EW films are not as revered over here (in the UK) as they are in Germany.

That's terrific news. I onl;y have one so far on DVD, Neues vom Hexer, which doesn't have an English option, or even subtitles so I can translate the dialogue (the actors generally talk too quickly for my command of the language).

Do the German EW films use the same stories as the UK EW films?
