I know one thing, PC George Dixon would be turning in his grave if he saw the state of the modern British bobby! Scruffy uniforms, stab-proof vests, never wearing hats and many so short and puny in stature that they just look ridiculous! My old man was a similar Dixon era copper and I know what he'd say "You only need to wear a stab-proof vest if chummie turns up with a truncheon-proof head!"

Whether Jack and his sisters ever appeared together I couldn't say but Max Tyler is the official historian for The British Music Hall Society and may be able to help you with your request. He can be contacted here:
maxt@hist.freeserve.co.uk

That was a useful link to Max Tyler thanks for that, I am new here and have a lot to get to know, but at 58 a bit of a late starter. I would be good to find any audio recording of G & D from their wireless programmes, and to locate anything else.

His role in Carve Her Name With Pride was just perfect. I always felt there was safety in the world with Jack about(although he did play some very nasty people as well) a very good actor

Oh Yes! Now I remember he was handcuffed with timid George Cole. An excellent film, also starred Jane Hylton and a small bit part for Susan Shaw.

There's interesting review of The Blue Lamp on IMDB (the one by vaughan.birbeck) which suggests that PC Dixon is not quite as lovable as most people assume. I do think Warner's characters tend to have a bit of an edge to them - his fathers always have to have their own way regardless of what Mrs Huggett want and in The Captive Heart he soon makes it clear that he's going to rule the roost in his hut even if it means a little violence to exert his authority. Excellent actor and not as typecast as people often think.

I think of JW as the UKs Spencer Tracy .... always the same, but always different. A very skilled, accomplished and subtle actor.

Re that review, I think those observations simply point out what a great character Dixon was, and what a great performance it is by JW. A policeman's lot is not a happy one for sure and the type of humour expressed by Dixon is the sort of thing I would expect them to say. The character is an experienced police officer and he would have 'an edge' to him. Joe Huggett would be the same ... in those days a man usually was the dominant force in the home so his word was 'law'.

I love JW.

Happy Birthday Daddy .... I love you!

Yes, I agree, partly, but I think those who say that PC Dixon was the perfect bobby might want to revist the scene where he tells PC Andy that sorting out a bloke beating up his wife isn't as important as finishing his tea. Joe Huggett wasn't averse to physically threatening his family either.

An ex-cop I once worked with told me that Warner used to appear in character as Dixon at Met Police parties - not so much in admiration but derision by the serving police officers.
