Firstly, take some time out to look at the ITN archive.

Talk about amazing material. What I'm wondering is if anyone here has knowledge of acquiring stuff NOT for broadcast (i.e for one's collection) I suppose this goes for other archive material. How easy is it to score stuff from these types of bodies?

The basic answer to your question is that you can't. They only sell to companies in the industry who want to broadcast their material. I believe they used to sell to private individuals (with a hefty rate of about £100 per half hour) but due to heavy demand, stopped this service.
