I am sure it was the early eighties. A long story to back me up on this. Where I was working at the time,we were going through serious staff cuts and a member of the management suggested to a fellow worker of mine (I can't remember the context) to watch the James Bond movies (new to tv then).
"How can I watch it,when I am working?"
"Video tape it"
"How can I afford a video recorder with the staff cuts that I am hearing about"?
"Oh yes - I forgot about that" rather glibly .
So I am certain,it was the early eighties. We Went on strike in 1984.

It was Doctor No, but it was first shown in 1975. I saw this on a James Bond fansite (cant remember which one) which gave all the ITV premiere dates. I remember watching it as an 8 year old at the time, as there was quite a bit made of the fact that it was the first TV screening of a Bond film in the UK (no VCR's then of course). All my friends watched it and we thought it was great. Over the next couple of years ITV screened the Bond films in chronological order. So by the summer of 1977, when 'The Spy Who Loved Me' came out in cinemas, we were all desperate to see it (not sure if all the Connery Bonds had been screened by this time, but certainly neither of Roger Moore's first two had). I had looked this up myself a couple of years back, as I was curious as to the date of the first screening, knowing I had watched it and that I was quite young at the time. Hope this clears it up, Kev.

I think they reached 'Live and Let Die' by 1980 and it got the biggest audience for a film TV premiere at that time if I recall correctly.

Managed to find the website with the broadcast facts/figures. It's www.bondsupplement.co.uk. There are several sections including one titled Bond on ITV. You're right about 'Live And Let Die', it took the number 1 slot in 1980 with an audience of 23.5 million. I was surprised that 'Doctor No' pulled in a 'mere' 9.2 million on its 1975 premiere.
