I am looking for the name and possibly a picture of a British character actor, active from the 40's through the 60's, I think. I seem to remember him showing up usually as ship's captains and doctors and growly uncles and that sort of thing. Usually sported a beard, somewhat bristly, and had wonderfully expressive eyebrows, I seem to remember. I think he might have shown up in a Disney film or two, and possibly a Powell/Pressburger film or two. Possibly even in a David Lean film from that period.

I have checked IMDB. I thought it might be Hugh Griffith of Tom Jones fame, but it definitely wasn't him. This is driving me crazy, and I do hope someone can help me. Aargh!

Thanks,

Sphinxvictorian
What about Noel Purcell - that fine Irish/Jewish actor?

Oi! You've broken all our bottles! I'm telling Mr Grimsdale of you......

Now that reminds me Of Mr Pooter in "The Diary of a Nobody" they were also Cummings and Goens. This caused Pooter much mirth as they cropped up frequently during the diary.

My schoolmates Albert Hammond and Harold Heggs appeared next to each other alphabetically in the school register. When teacher was doing the roll call each day there were sniggers when he called out 'Hammond, Heggs' dropping the 'H' (this was of course in the North of England). Those brave enough would quietly repond, 'And baked beans'!.

I have to say simply from reading sphinx's description, JRJ sprang instantly to mind. Although I wouldn't necessarily have thought his eyebrows were the main feature.

Did Albert Hammond become a school teacher and have a beautiful French wife?
