Hi there.

I'm here to pick your brains again. I'm working on a review of Terence Fisher's rather good B-picture Final Appointment from 1954. It was produced by Francis Searle and stars John Bentley and Eleanonr Summerfield.

The film was made by the ACT film unit which I think was the only filmmakers union with a commercial film production arm. Are there any books or, better still, websites which cover the history of the company? I've tried surfing but have only found brief references to it. Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

Iain

Sounds like a visit to the BFI library would be best advised for this.

I would say so. I'm pretty sure the Library is home - or has access to - the bectu project, an oral history, long running and would almost certainly cover the activities you mention. They also have (I know) the union journals (though I have only seen those from wartime). Phone them first to get the lie of the land; they are extremely helpful. Long term, joining the library is cheaper than getting day passes....

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

ACT ( the union) became ACTT. The latest incarnation is BECTU and a request via their trade magazine "Stage Screen and Radio" might produce the response you require. E-mail to jturner@bectu.org.uk
