Thumbs down

I've just been watching Serious Charge on video. Some wonderful coffee bar/youth club scenes with Jess Conrad and Philip Lowrie(Dennis Tanner) as juvenile delinquents and Cliff looking about as menacing as a blancmange! The dancers at the Youth Club look about 40. I have a vague recollection that Leigh Madison who plays Andrew Ray's pregnant girlfriend was either a singer or dancer. Does anyone know? This film just proves that there were yobbos in those days too!

Hi Doris.
I remember Leigh from 'Our House'.She also played small roles in big films and big roles in small films, but I don't recall seeing her sing or dance.
That's only my memory of course.
Hard to imagine, but she must be around 70 now!

It was an ITV comedy series from early 60's featuring various (mainly 'Carry on..') stars, living in a communal house.
You can find it on IMDB,and also if you search threads on this forum we touched on it briefly recently.

Hi,
I've just been watching Leigh Madison dancing with Paddy Stone in a 1960's film version of the 6.5 Special.
She was like Flick Colby with style.

For those of 'a certain age' this programme was one of the many forerunners of Top of The Pops..... Lonnie Donegan, Jim Dale, Petula Clark, The King Brothers etc... on Video/DVD by Hepsville Films.

Has it been released on DVD in the UK?

I bought a DVD on Ebay though I doubt it would be described as released! It was great to see it again.

You'd need to email for details.

Here is the film poster.

The only surviving episode of the BBC tv series
of 6.5 Special is available to view at www.screenonline.org.uk
(you have to go to a UK public/college library to view this)......

That's great news thanks. I think it's my age - this was when I became interested in pop and blues. Now I can't wait to return to UK to view it.

Again, thanks.

Doris, according to the Serious Charge page at IMDB Leigh Madison was indeed in the film. Somebody else who was in it was the famous Harrison Marks glam model, Marie Devereux. 2 small scenes as a sexy girl in a coffee bar. I've just updated her CV at IMDB to that affect having, like you, just seen the film again!

There's actually at least two episodes known to survive. I've got copies of two complete shows but it's possible there's one other or just perhaps a fragment of another show in existence.

Interesting story behind the 6.5 Special television series.
Until 1957, television had observed a strict demarcation between children's and adults programs. It is hard to imagine now but the BBC at the time even went as far as taking its programs off the air between 6 and 7 pm.
The 6.5 Special was one of the first programs to be slotted into that time zone. Hence the programs title.
The BBC were convinced that there was a youth audience to be captured. The first show aired on the 16th February 1957 with acts Michael Holliday and Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen. The host was the well known DJ Pete Murray.
The 6.5 Special was of course the precursor to shows such as Ready,Steady,Go and Top Of The Pops.

Pete Murray, as seen in bit parts in various films like The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Peeping Tom and some TV series like Man from Interpol and Dangerman.

Wasn't he also, rather ludicrously cast, in something called "Caravan" in the 40s?
