I wonder if somebody could give me any information concerning Dear Murderer (1947) which was directed by Arthur Crabtree. I'm interested in two things about this film. Firstly is it set in London and secondly is this a studio bound production or a film containing location footage beyond brief establishing shots?

Thank you,
Christopher Matheson

Yes, it is set in London. Dennis price's barrister character lives in a block called Temple Court and there are brief shots of the building. There are also shots of Scotland Yard later in the film, but the film is mainly an indoor affair.

OK Christopher
I suppose you've read the comment in Halliwell's about the film:
"Thoroughly artificial pattern play set among the unreal rich, from one of those unaccountable West End successes, here boringly filmed"
I didn't think it was THAT bad
I'm intrigued by your interest in this film. Would you care to elaborate by any chance?

A mate of mine just watched this on TCM at some ridiculous hour and was raving about it and wondering why the female lead (?) didn't go on to super stardom ? Any comments ?

Who, Greta Gynt? She did all right. See her filmography on IMDb

The IMDb mini-biography says:
Glamourous, blonde, Norwegian actress who added a sparkle to British movies.

Greta Gynt usually played a leading part, and remained at the top of the British cinema from the late 1930s through to the 40s. An opportunity for Greta to experience a Hollywood career came in the early 1950s, but it was too late. She had sadly lost most of the sparkle which kept her at the top in Britain. In Hollywood, her name was often found towards the bottom of a cast list in supporting roles. She returned to Britain making films until 1964.

After retiring from the screen she lived in a luxury Kensington property known simply as 'Mrs Moore' and her career was sadly forgotten when she died in 2000. No television news show covered her passing nor was she honoured at the BAFTA Film awards during the annual tribute to film stars passed away, which was a shame for someone so famous during the 1940s and 50s.

It's a film of a stage play which does account for the slight, er, staginess. Since the play starred Terrence De Marney and Barrie Livesey, I think the producers definitely got lucky with the film casting.
