Has anyone heard of a film of this title? I came across a newspaper report of 1950 to say that James Mason and his wife were filming at Chorleywood for a movie by this title. I can't say it's featured on my radar. Does it ring any bells?

I don't know if this is any help but "Wee Sonny MacGregor" was the name of the character played by Peter Sellers in the 1957 film "The Naked Truth".

Ah Yes, the Soviet Union. All them wheatfields and ballet in the evenings

In 1952 James Mason made a film called LADY POSSESSED, it was based on a novel by his then wife, Pamela Kellino, and he wrote the screeenplay in collaboration with her.
Since films take some time to come together, this project was probably in some pre-production stage in 1950 and may be the film to which the article referred.

"The Dark Lady" must have been the working title. "The Lady Possessed" , as it became, was an independent production by Portland Films, the company formed by Mason and his wife Pamela Kellino, and was based on her novel "Del Palma". James Mason had the idea of shooting half in England and half in Hollywood but was taken aback when Pamela's first husband Roy Kellino was lined up to direct. In the event, he was replaced by William Spiers. Some of the sequences in the film were shot at Ollerberrie Farm in Kings Langley, the Masons' former home, so it fits that some filming took place at Chorleywood. The film was a turkey; the New York Times review called it "A bleak little drama of neuroses" and "meaningless twaddle". Even Mason himself admitted that it should have been written off as a tax loss and not shown."
