Question Margaret Rutherford - Miss Marple films

. . Do you know anyone who was involved with, or worked on, any of the four Margaret Rutherford 'Miss Marple' films from 1960-1964 at MGM's British Studios at Borehamwood ?
. . Do you have any contact details of any such person ? - or anecdotes ?
.
. . Have you any Set-stills, Clips from the cutting room floor, scripts, storyboards, props used on set, or just details of locations, contractors used, etc. etc. ( well, I can hope ! )
.
. . Were you a musician in the Ron Goodwin Orchestra ?
. . Perhaps you're just a fan of these films and have vast knowledge !!.
.
. . I am trying to compile enough material to document the production initially of these four British Films . ( edit: naive fool )
...The first in the series was MURDER SHE SAID.
. . If you can help in any way, please get in touch.
.
Thankyou very much.
Ady

At least one of these (memory fails me on which) was shot in part in Denham Village, off the A412, nr. Pinewood.

I'll have to rewatch them.

Where was MURDER AHOY ! done ?

Hi Smudge,

Both 'Murder Ahoy' and 'Murder At The Gallop' were filmed at Denham village, Buckinghamshire.
Denham fronted for Millchester in those films. Miss Marples house was filmed at
Misbourne Bridge, Denham.
Other locations used in "Murder At The Gallop' include Hilfield Castle, north of Bushey, Herts. which was the scene of the murder. Also the Kingis Arms Inn was used in Amersham. This inn is well known for also appearing in 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'

Dave.

I have never been able to ascertain if George Pollock (the director of all four films) is still alive. I imagine he has passed away but you never know. Do you know Ady?

Thumbs up

Thanks Guys ! Yes, all this I agree with - I was surprised when visiting these locations last year to find that in the title sequence of Murder Ahoy, Miss Marple leaves a shop ( 'Millie's ' ) in Denham, crosses the road , and arrives in Amersham ! The wonders of film !
JamesM - no, I don't know either if George Pollock is still with us.

.
Thanks again - Ady

Wink Murder Ahoy

Hi, all who posted messages re Margaret's Marple films. I've long been a fan and it's great to be in contact with like minded folk. Re Muder Ahoy! , the coastal sequences were filmed in the village of St Mawes in Cornwall. It is still as it appears in the film.

I have also heard that Miss Marple's cottage featured in the films, which is in the village of Denham in Buckingshire, was onced owned by John Mills - not sure if that is true though. It was on sale about 4 years ago for 600K. Must be much more now.

Would be interested to hear from anyone with an interest in Margaret Rutherford. She deserves her own Appreciation Society!

All best

Jack

Love Margaret Rutherford, Mrs Fazackerly the cashier in The Smallest Show on Earth, The shop lifter in Trouble in Store, The spiritualist in Blith Spirit, The Headmistress in The Happiest Days Of Your Life, I was looking at a TV programme that I recorded a few years ago entitled AN EVENING WITH MARGARET RUTHERFORD starring Timothy Spall, and it was based on the premise that she came back to earth for one evening, it was quite a revelation and believe it or not Timothy Spall made an exceptionally excellent Margaret, Simon Ward played Stringer Davis.

I somehow missed the Timothy Spall doc. on Margaret, Chris - thanks for mentioning that. If anybody out there has a spare copy please send me a PM. Would love to see it. Wonder if he's a fan as well!

I went to a NFT screening of Happiest Day of Your Life a couple of years ago and it was great to see it with an audience who knew all of the sceenplay and laughed and cheered throughout! Great! fun! Maybe some of you out there were there?

Might be wrong, but I think the Spall show was a part of C4's 'For One Night Only' series which featured, as you say, on old stars allowed back "for one night only". Memory's a bit hazy but Spall's playing of Rutherford was great.

I too am a HUGE Margaret Rutherford fan! I've always loved the Marple films, and really enjoy anything with her. I went to a tribute to the great lady at the NFT 2 or 3 years ago. This was fantastic - it was part lecture/part clip presentation - and there were clips from all the classics. There was also a clip of a straight TV drama she did in the mid-1960s, in which I believe (if my memory serves me correctly) she was being held captive. The final clip was a whole 12 minutes of The Happiest Days of Your Life! I also found the audience extremely appreciative - it was great to be surrounded by fellow fans. The chap who presented the lecture had previously lectured (in a similar vein) on Alastair Sim - I wish I'd been able to see that.

Default George Brown

You might want to get in touch with Tina Brown, daughter of George Brown, the producer. I assume he's no longer with us, but she must have been a girl in the early 60s and might have some memories of her father (and perhaps some others involved with the Miss Marples). Tina, of course, was the editor of the New Yorker, and has generally been very prominent in the media, including having a TV show in the U.S. She's the wife of Harald Evans. A star couple. It shouldn't be too difficult to track her down.
