Default Greyfriars Bobby?

Hello all you film buffs, here's a poser. I saw a black and white film years ago about Greyfriars Bobby (not the one with Donald Crisp) I thought that the old shepherd was played by Finlay Currie, but I could be wrong. I don't know how old it is, could be late 1930s or 1940s possibly early 1950s (that should cover it!) I remember I enjoyed it and would like to see it again. Finding out what it's called is a start!!
Thanks all, John.

OK, ignoring that you saw it in B&W because it could have been a colour film shown on TV in B&W...

As well as Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog (1961) which starred Donald Crisp (and the dog), there was also Challenge to Lassie (1949) which was based on the story of Greyfriars Bobby - and also starred Donald Crisp (and the dog of course)

There was also the 2005 remake

Hi Steve: Not quite sure what film the last paragraph of your posting is referring, but the 2005 film was a remake of the 1943 film 'Lassie Come Home', which was not based on the Greyfriars Bobby story. Incidentally the story is absolutely true, but not quite as portrayed in the Hollywood film. (surprise, surprise!!).

I was referring to Greyfriars Bobby (2005). That seems to be the Greyfriars Bobby story, not the "dog goes wandering in search of his owner" story of Lassie Come Home.

Steve: Ahh!! Didn't know there had been a remake. Thanks for the info, must check it out. Apologies.

A bit of useless trivia, I belive this to be the only photo in existence of Greyfriars Bobby.

The 1930s b&w film you are thinking of, may have been OWD BOB (1937) where the old shepherd was played by Will Fiffe an elderly Scottish musical artiste who also specialised in playing curmudgeonly old Scotsmen. But the story was not about Greyfriars Bobby it was about the rivalry between two sheepdogs in Cumberland.

Hello Steve,
Thanks for the reply and the info. I have the film 'Challenge to Lassie' I bought it thinking it was the one I remembered, but no go, and I think the 60s one is too late. I remember that the dog in this film was a small terrier and towards the end of the film (or the end) there is a statue in memory of the dog. Anyway thanks again, John.
