Default Hot Millions

Is Hot Millions considered a British movie? It was filmed at Borehamwood. I am surprised that it is not in the list of films. Peter Ustinov, Maggie Smith, Robert Morley, a slimmer Lynda Baron than Nurse Gladys from Open All Hours, plus a couple of non-British folk; Karl Malden, Bob Newhart, and Cesar Romero in Ustinov's Oscar nominated original screenplay. Plus, the title song is sung by Lulu.
Maggie Smith is filmed trying on clothes in the Apple Boutique on Baker Street. If you haven't seen it, tsk.

I've always thought of it as a British film but my copy of Halliwell's Film Guide lists it as 'US'.

The IMDb lists it as a UK-US co-production.

...and the BFI lists it as a British production. Take your pick!

The nationality of the actors, scriptwriter, or even director don't come into the equation. What really matters, or what most people consider matters most when trying to determine the nationality of a film, is just one thing - where did the money come from? Who paid for it?

In the case of Hot Millions, it was an MGM production so should really count as an American film.

What about most of those films that turn up on TCM (the MGM Borehamwood's) like Private Potter, Time Bomb, Night Must Fall and the Margaret Rutherford Agathie Christe's?

Default Hot Millions

I may have to amend my"Favorite British Film", although the sight of Peter Ustinov carrying a BOAC bag makes it hard for me to list it as my favorite American film.

It depends if they were paid for by MGM (US) or just made at MGM's Borehamwood studio with British money.

I'm just saying that it's always been tricky trying to sort out the nationality of a film and if you want to do it you should have some rules and the "who paid for it?" rule seems as good as any other rule to me. Maybe better than most.

I'm not saying that you must follow that rule though.

It must be an English film. It was made with US money, as a great deal of British films have been since the War, but shot in England. Is Bond English? There's your answer.
