Fanny Hill And UK Censorship
See if you can help me out with this one.
In 1964 Russ Meyer made FANNY HILL probably to cash in on the post Lady Chatterly boom about erotic classic novels. The tag line was something like "They Said It Could Not Be Filmed".
The film made it over to the UK in 1965 and John Trevelyan in his book "What The Censor Saw" dismissed it and said he refused to give it a certificate, although some local councils gave it a local X rating and it was shown in 1965 in UK cinemas in this form.
I now find out that 6 months later - it was playing with an A certificate and was even on double bills with adventure films like "Taza Son Of Cochise" which would have probably attracted kids. Now my question is - and please, only if you really know it - did the film get recut and resubmitted to allow it through with an A.
I never actually saw this film - I was too young for it at the time, but if anyone saw it can they let me know what they thought. Did it make it to your town? Was it really that offensive?
In case you think the A version is a different film - it's not, it starred Miriam Hopkins as an A and as an X.
